A thread where all things and nothing can be discussed. The place to drop in to share a joke, a peeve or just talk about what is going on.

So. I did a stupid thing and now suffers the consequence.
I use Musicbee as my main PC music software - as a player and to organise my digital collection (13.714 files and counting) Anyway, someway or another I managed to set 1993 as the release year on a few hundred albums. Don't know how or when. Having the wrong year of course does not affect the music, but it just annoys me, so started to fix manually. Grew tired and looked around for a tool and found a built in auto tag function. Tested on one album, worked fine. Hey, great (thought I, the not very clever, but lazy guy) Set it to work on all the affected albums and ... it it fucked up majorly. Tracks assigned to all kinds of bogus albums, years fucked up, tracks scattered around on wrong albums. It is a mess, and it will take me quite a few hours to manually restore it all.
Have not totally given up on a easy fix yet - I have backup of the files themselves - but not sure if the tag database is included in the backup. Will have a look tomorrow - fingers crossed.
So how was your evening?

I still use iTunes because I'm used to it and my devices are all Apple. I still find stuff that is mislabeled (all caps, a letter off in the band name on one of the albums, etc.), the year is wrong, the songs are not in the right order. Plus, promos now come with the genre populated and it is some bullshit, multi-word non-genre that I have to correct or it makes steam come out of my ears.

And BC purchases from Metal on Metal, where they consistently have taged the label as the album artist - so annoying

I haven’t had too many errors but the annoying issue I’ve had since acquiring a rather forgettable experimental brutal death album by Encenathrakh is that the hideous cover of it replaced my cover for the new Eternal Champion and a few others in my iTunes. On top of that, the new Benediction album cover now shows up for a dozen other albums on my phone. So many mixed album covers it is just a bummer. I want to gaze at the album cover of the album I’m actually listening to from time to time. Especially in the case of albums like the newest Enslaved, which has a nice cover to look at while listening.

If you ever move away from apple, I can't recommend MusicBee enough.
Great piece of free software, so customizable and configurable, that it is almost ridiculous.

Ok, found the backup, restored the DB files. Alas. Apparently I had made a backup after doing the damage.
But because I am old and wise and feel about backups as hobbits do about breakfasts, I found my second backup and restored from that.
Problem solved.
Happy as a clam I am.

Friday night in lockdown land - so what are you all doing?
Here I'm having a beer (local US style pale ale) with a nice rum on the side. Listening to some tunes while reading some reviews and assorted news on the net.

It’s Saturday almost 10am here in Shanghai, about to teach 3 of my violin students. Temperature is super nice today! Around 58 degrees F. After that, my schedule is clear today to do what I want. Chinese New Year holiday is nice times.

Saw Grabbers myself a little later - ok enough, but not great, followed by half of the Pursuit of vikings docu. Should have started with that really.

I used to live in the Phoenix area in AZ and I got spoiled on those warm temperatures. Winter in Shanghai was really gentle this year, but usually gets quite cold for my blood.

I'm on a Mac, so not worth running in a Windows VM. On Windows I had MediaMonkey before switching to a Mac. It had started getting somewhat bloated when they added video support. I ended up getting Clementine. It's free and cross-platform (Windows, Mac, Linux).

iTunes and I have reached a state of detente and as long as neither side attempts to change the balance of power, tensions will remain low
I'm sitting here editing some of Luxi's interviews and writing reviews of old Ozzy albums that are missing from the site (Blizzard of Ozz, Bark at the Moon) while listening to synthwave, which I now love thanks to that monster Sargon turning me on to it.
