So after finding out that a band I got a promo from was lying about being from the Middle East for some reason, I think I'm going to do a piece on bands that pull this kind of shit for one reason or another. I know that Ghost Bath, Janaza, and Seeds of Iblis have all done something similar, but does anyone here know any other examples I can look into?

I can't imagine why a band would bother doing this

I can't imagine why a band would bother doing this Well, I know of a few that did after finding the first, and my best guess is to generate clout (i.e., claim to be from somewhere that making Metal is difficult/criminal to gain praise). Presuming that is the reason, really pisses me off.

In some Middle East countries it is forbidden by some very strict laws to play heavy metal... hence I do understand why some bands may lie about their true location.

In general I think political climates and other global conflicts can create a reason for claiming to be from an untrue origin. However, I also do believe that’s not the reason for some bands who just want to have a fake origin. Perhaps it is believed that the named country helps to lift a particular desired outlook on the band. I am, of course, now just throwing thoughts out there that I couldn’t support with evidence.

See, it's the latter one I'm more interested in. It's one thing to live in a country where making Metal is illegal and claim to be from somewhere else to cover your tracks, but it's another when it's the other way around.

What if it's a made up country? Wasn't planning on discussing that, but I guess I can mention Type O Negative offhand when talking about bands doing it as a joke.

Minor addendum, my translator decided to listen to some of the songs from those faux-Middle Eastern bands and found that they weren't even saying the lyrics. The only parts they found that were words were them shouting "Allah" and pronouncing it incorrectly. None of that is surprising, but I think it's worth noting.

If you want that in the text, you'll have to tell me where and the exact wording we want. I just finished proofreading and laying out a 20-page tribute and my brain is on the fritz. lol
