Hey guys, I wanted to create a thread for Progressive Metal, partly because I’m not generally very fond of it, and I tend to choose to avoid it. However, I don’t flat out believe I just don’t like Progressive Metal, I just don’t have much sense of desire to listen to it. So I’m asking here for any albums that stand out to you all who do like it or at least know some of the genre essentials that you believe I should know.
I consider Borknagar a Progressive Black Metal band at this point and I think all of their stuff is brilliant. They’re one of the bands that make me believe I don’t hate it altogether. Enslaved are fairly progressive as well. But I’m hoping you guys can point me towards some sub genre classics that I should check out.

Dream Theater - Images and Words from 1992 (my favorite DT album) is a pretty essential album to have if you are new to progressive metal...
Also, definitely their Awake album from 1994...

I’ve always had a hard time getting into progressive. I think my most recent review was Vanden Plas, some 20+ years after I first read interviews with them.
I almost saw Dream Theater live back in 2010. They were playing at Ottawa Bluesfest (which had already started steering away from blue) just before Iron Maiden. I was going with my supervisor at the time (he and his wife had tickets for the whole fest; that day he gave me her ticket). But we went for supper after work and had a few beers, so by the time we got there Dream Theater had already finished playing. It was fucking 35 celsius out that day.. Even without moving we were sweating even though it was in the evening.
Kenziner is another one, other than Vanden Plas, that I’ve given a shot. Good band.
Oh... On September 11, 2001, Dream Theater released “Live Scenes from New York”, a 3-CD live album. But it shows the NYC skyline burning. So the CDs were recalled very quickly. An “online friend” of mine went to buy as many as I could get so resell them on eBay, but eBay quickly shut down any auction (“ buy it now” was rare, maybe didn’t exist back then) that tried to profit from 9/11, so he got stuck with a lot of them. I bought one off of him just to help him out. I’ve actually never listened to that album!

Symphony X starting with The Divine Wings of Tragedy and onwards is essential listening. Pagan Mind's first two albums are damn solid examples of Prog/Power Fates Warning are essential to understanding the genre, from their more mystical days with Jon Arch to their more Rush-esque period with Ray Adler. Basically go form The Specter Within to Inside Out and you're good.
Worth noting I'm not too into Prog, so this is just off the top of my head.

because I’m not generally very fond of it ... I tend to choose to avoid it. ... I just don’t have much sense of desire to listen to it. Admirable dedication to exploring beyond your comfort zone, but man, you must have a lot of time on your hands

But yes, I’m dedicated to trying to appreciate this sub genre more. That’s for sure.

I also like Threshold, especially Dead Reckoning
