I was finally going to a show this coming Friday - a sit down Baest concert for only 70 people.
I was really looking forward to that.
And today the PM announced a partial lockdown starting this Wednesday.
Damn, am I disappointed. (It is totally the right thing to do, but still.)
Thankfully I managed one festival in 2020;
A buddy and me travelled to Hamburg for Hell over Hammaburg, where we caught among others great bands like Argus, Visigoth, Traveler, Gates of Slumber and Haunt.
Back then corona was still the "novel" virus and was not really widespread in Europe outside of italy.
(We all thought. Still the bustrip home, with more than a few fellow passengers coughing and what have you was a bit nervewrecking. ).
But we went into lockdown, just a few days later. So that was that. But at least I got to see a few concerts that weekend.
What are your 2020 gig stories?

The only show I saw in person this year was Ross the Boss on January 30th. Usually lineup of good local openers. I remember freezing because they sometimes leave the back door open. At the time COViD-19 was still just something on the news, so I was more worried about the cold and the flu.

Ah man, Ross the Boss is on my bucketlist, must make sure to find a gig when the worlds opens again. Finally saw Manowar a couple of years back. Which was an underwhelming experience to say the least, so would be good to experience some of the old material live. Usually lineup of good local openers. You are in Canada right?

Yeah, can imagine that you have. Not wise to which cities various bands are from, but you seem to have good thing going in Canada these days, a lot of promising young bands are popping up all over the place. (Riot City, Traveler, Gatekeeper, Smoulder, Possessed Steel, Infrared, Metalian etc)

In fact, back when I reviewed one of their albums in 2018, it was when doing some research about the band that I noticed they were playing live a couple of weeks later. I had not been to a show in nearly six years at the time. I went and, well, that resulted in me attending dozens of shows in Ottawa and Montreal over the following 18 months. The apocalypse put a stop to that. I’ve seen Metalian (who are from Montreal) 4-5 times in Montreal and Ottawa over the past 15 years or so. Very solid live band. Denim and leather all the way.

The new stuff is good and they really inject a lot of energy into the old Manowar tunes.
The singer, Marc Lopes, and I go back to the late 80s. He was in a local band that I used to play on my college radio show. He used to come up to the studios on Friday nights and we'd all sing songs like "Black Winds, Fire and Steel" at the top of our lungs

I attended to three festivals here in Finland this summer that only had Finnish Metal bands on the bill: Ensiferum, Wolfheart, Bloodred Hourglass, Domination Black and many more...
Cool times nevertheless keeping in mind the times have been pretty darn difficult for each of us due to this annoying (yet so lethal) Covid-19...

Hopefully your local scene will re-emerge once all this is behind us and we all have shows aplenty in our futures. I’ve seen Metalian ... very solid live band. Denim and leather all the way. I have actually new checked Metalian out above a very quick listen in passing. Perhaps I should go and rectify that.

Sounds like great fun, Black Winds, Fire and Steel is a killer song.

Yeah, I did recally reading that festivals happened in Finland this year. Not envious at all - no sir, not me. (or something.)
Our local festival, Copenhell, had the killer line up to end them all this year, such a shame it got cancelled. (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Mercyful Fate, High Command, Gatecreeper, Benediction, Crypt Sermon, Destruction and many more that I looked forward to.)
Oh well.
How come that you was allowed to gather in crowds?

We Finns, surprisingly, didn't have many Coranavirus cases in Finland during this summer, so that's why it was allowed to arrange some (smaller) festivals.

Edit: just looked up your stats - you are actually doing really, really well - that is amazing. But good for you!

Yes, it's true that we don't have so many infections up here in Finland compared to many other European countries where this Corona-situation is really bad. An isolated country in an abandoned area where nobody else wants to live except us, poor bastards known largely as 'Finns', too (ha!), explains it all, I suppose...

There were shows in Finland, but I didn't go all year. I have three small kids, a job and a time consuming hobby that takes up my summers.
