Halberd-Remnants of Crumbled Empires Hot damn, y'all like Celtic Frost and Asphyx? Imagine if those two went to war and that's this album.
Powar-Post War Metallica-inspired Thrash with a kick of Hardcore. I have said everything about this album.

Atlantean Kodex: White Goddess, Golden Bough, Course of Empire, Pnakotic Demos
I have the hardest time deciding which of these I like best. But while Goddess & Empire are both extremely well crafted masterpieces and objectively better albums, I tend to gravitate to Bough as my favourite. I like the more basic, less polished sound I think - it somehow makes the songs more powerful.

As much as I love Doom and Epic Doom, for some reason I just could not appreciate White Goddess and Golden Bough very much. I don't know if it's that I feel they're just too epic or what, but these albums did not connect with me as much as I expected them to. Did you need to listen to these albums several times before they stuck with you, or was it pretty easy for you? I liked the sound, it's pleasant after all, but nothing really stuck with me. I believe I listened through Golden Bough 3 times. White Goddess maybe twice.

I took a break from things I want/plan to review to catch up with some new releases and things that I've been excited to check out:
Cannibal Corpse- Violence Unimagined This is great. I've always been a fan of CC since The Bleeding (didn't care so much for the Barnes era prior to The Bleeding) and this is a really good late-career album for the band. Even more exciting for me is that Erik Rutan is now playing in the band, which just feels really appropriate in my mind. He did not change the band's sound much at all, but there are three songs he wrote according to what I read, and the track "Ritual Annihilation" which he wrote really has his stamp all over it. It's so dense and Hate Eternal-esque in comparison to the rest of the album. His chunky riff and leads style combined with his dense composition approach is so Rutan, and I love it. I love Hate Eternal and this just felt like a Hate Eternal song with Corpsegrinder on vocals. Really cool stuff! Also, Rutan's solos are really noticeable since he has a more modern approach to soloing in a way with his more diatonic approach melodically as opposed to the band's always atonal guitar solos of past albums. I love this album, I'm on my 5th spin in two days currently.
Spectral Wound- A Diabolic Thirst I just finished my first run through of this disc. I was feeling recommended to check it out due to sources pointing to this as an album to check out. I definitely like this, but I feel I don't know it very well yet. To me, this feels very Darkthrone-esque but with much better recording without sacrificing a brutal sound. I love the mixing of the record. As for the songs, I'm not sure what sticks for me yet, but I'm sure to listen to it much more.
Bewitcher- Cursed Be Thy Kingdom I mean, we should all be checking this out, right? As much hype as it has gotten, there isn't much reason to avoid checking it out. I've only heard the first track at this moment, and it is an intro that works! I liked its bluesy guitar lines. Hoping the rest of the record lives up to the hype!

That said, these are huge songs with many parts and many little details, and my appreciation definitely grew as I became familiar with the songs. I notice new things still, when listening.
I have a feeling that AK is perhaps not for everyone. For me, their music resonate emotionally with me in a way that are hard to describe, like listening to an AK song satisfies an itch I did not now I had. If one does not get that emotional response, the experience will probably be different.

It sunk its hooks into my brain immediately. The Golden Bough and Course of Empire are a little less immediate, to my ears.

Amon Amarth-Once Sent from the Golden Hall Hard to believe this was a debut. Holds up beautifully today.
Phobos Monolith-When the Light Will Fade Holy shit, a good Melodeath record. I haven't heard one of those in ages.

Scum-Garden of Shadows Technically finished in 1996, this only got released 20 years after the fact. Shame that, because while it's not as inventive as Purple Dreams and Magic Poems, it's basically what Amorphis should have ended up being after their debut.

After reviewing a couple of not so great albums, I decided like Mike up here to just listen to stuff I want for a day. Haha
Troll- Legend Master I should probably write up a review for this one. It was realistically tied for my favorite album of 2019, right up there with Traveler's debut album. But when I think about the depth of the effort by Troll, it is the superior record in my eyes. I will be listening to this modern progressive Doom album for the rest of my life, I presume.
Cannibal Corpse- The Wretched Spawn (my personal favorite CC album), Bloodthirst, Red Before Black, and Violence Unimagined I must say, the new one is one of their best works in a long time! Much better than Red Before Black, which was also a good one. But still, Violence Unimagined lacks the chaotic and dangerous vibe that earlier records had, which is the only sore point for me regarding this new album. I'm a CC fan, minus the early Barnes era. I kinda want to review the new album myself, as I have so much to say about it.
Doomsword- Resound the Horn To be honest, I have not listened to this one more than two or three times, so now seems like a perfect time to start fresh with it as I've not listened to a good epic doom album in a while.
