Nekromantheon- Visions of Trismegistos Wow, I've been thirsty for a solid Thrash album, and this is it! It's aggressive, sounds organic, and has just enough surprises to keep me engaged throughout. The guitars especially pop! Great stuff! Only knew of it from Sargon's review, so thanks for that!

Lycanthro-Mark of the Wolf Solid Traditional Metal. That's about all I can say about it
Neoandertals-Ebu Gogo Gutting the Child I fucking hate this band. Two clearly competent musicians working to be primitive and hitting sloppy and irritating instead.

Cannibal Corpse- Violence Unimagined Truth be told, I've already looped this record more than 30 listens... I like CC a lot personally, but I never imagined I'd enjoy the new record this much, especially considering there wasn't much about the previous album Red Before Black that got me to replay it over and over. I probably only listened to that album 10 times to this day in comparison. But the new one is seriously one of their best works. I think Erik Rutan being in the band now is one of the big reasons the band made significant gains here, even if his involvement was perfectly suitable and fit right in with the band in a discreet manner. His soloing and leads cannot be mistaken, with his diatonic, counterpoint-influenced style. He just isn't an atonal whammy-bar solo kind of guy when you compare him to the others. His addition really adds a new flavor. I love this new record, guys.

Nekromantheon - Visions of Trismegistos
Just an amazing album... very energetic, full of untamed aggression, etc. I just had to order it from Hells Headbangers as vinyl.

At the Gates-Slaughter of the Soul And so ends my regular tradition of remembering I own this, listening to it, generally liking it outside of the vocals, finding the backlash it gets severely overblown, shelving it, and forgetting I own it for about 8 months.

I almost bought the vinyl at a local record store (a few months before the apocalypse), but I checked it out on Spotify first and I wasn’t crazy about it.

Russian thrash band that sounds a LOT like Nuclear Assault. Pretty cool album though...

Cannibal Corpse- Tomb of the Mutilated (1992), The Bleeding (1994), Eaten Back to Life (1990), and Vile (1996) Yes, I skipped Butchered at Birth in my recent CC playlist, but only because I just don't care for that album all that much. This is me straying from my current review duties as I'm just swamped with too much work right now and I lost my headphones for a few days, so I'm just blasting these from my MacBook as I do my work. I chose these albums because when I reflect on the band, it is the Chris Barnes era that I just never got too deeply engaged with. Tomb of the Mutilated feels like a hugely popular album for me to have never liked it that much, so I revisited it, and ended up listening to it three times straight to find that my tastes have apparently changed over the years and that it's a pretty great album! I also didn't realize it's actually a concept album, so that's another level of coolness that Barnes brought with that album I never realized. The cover art turned out to be extremely complementary to the album. The Bleeding was actually my first taste of the band, when I heard the song "Fucked by a Knife" on some MYSPACE (lol!) player way back in the day. That album had a bizarre tone to me at the time, and always felt as if it was somewhat muted, but now I realize it feels like a unique transition point in the band's career in which they were going for that chunkier sound that they turned to here. This album is surprisingly atmospheric, and it's cool to see how much it has grown on me after all these years.
Chris Barnes really didn't impress me on any of these releases as a vocalist, but I can't say I didn't like him here either. His first two albums sounded a bit sloppy to my ears with the band, and on The Bleeding and Tomb of the Mutilated he sounded at his best. And then came Vile, the first Corpsegrinder album which I previously never gravitated towards but also never disliked. This one is quite good, and it is very clear that Corpsegrinder was the needed fit here. Man, I just love this band. Can't see why some people hate them. Also I have a lot of respect for them with regards to their resilience amidst all the censorship, bans, and odd requests from venues worldwide on which songs they cannot play and whatnot. I respect bands with a strong vision and determination to push forward with it despite opposition.

Man, I just love this band. Can't see why some people hate them. I think they get some hate simply because they are the biggest death metal band and because they are sort of the poster band for death metal in the eyes of non-fans who know nothing about the genre. I've never understood how people can say they just release the same album over and over. They are such a different band now from the Tomb of the Mutilated days that I don't see how people with ears can say they never change. They got more technical with each album in the nineties and, in my opinion, became better songwriters over time. They are the masters of maintaining a balance of tasteful technicality mixed with memorable songwriting. I love death metal, but a good bit sort of escapes my memory after I hear it. I always remember Cannibal songs after one or two listens. They are also a wonderfully nice bunch of guys. Alex Webster in particular always comes off as super humble and supportive of other musicians trying to better their craft. Death metal royalty.
