Dream Theater- Images and WordsAtlantean Kodex- Course of EmpireCouple of good ones, there. Course is very good, just not "better" or "different" from Golden Bough and White Goddess so it somehow feels less amazing
OT Fell Harvest - Pale Light in a Dying World

Galvanizer- Sanguine Vigil A buddy recommended me to listen to the new album by Finland’s Wrathrone, which I checked out. It was solid but brought nothing extraordinary in my opinion. Then I saw that a member was also in Galvanizer and I remembered always meaning to check out this album and never getting around to it. Really glad I came to this! This is a great deathgrind album! Love the sound they went for here, and these are really well-written tracks. luxi nailed it on his review of the album. They’ve got a new album releasing this month. I heard a track that was released and was a little disappointed, but I’m still hopeful for something nice on it.

Cool, pretty Slayer-tinged Thrash from LA...

Worsen-Cursed to Witness Life Blind purchase that ended up being perfectly solid Polish Black Metal a la Mgla.
Corrupted Saint-Mutilated Before the Masses Modern Death/Thrash with some Slayer leanings. Alright, but there's plenty like it.

When listening to Course of Empire, I usually feel bad for rating it lower than the other two full lengths, because it is really a great album. But there is just something lacking that is hard to put the finger on. "Crunch" perhaps?

Powerwolf - Call of the Wild It's Powerwolf, no surprises anywhere here. But it's really fun.
Cauldron Born - Legacy of the Atlantean Kings I'm blown away by how good this is. And Matthew Knight is a great vocalist, how have I not heard him before?
Starlight Ritual - Sealed in Starlight
Also, the new Maiden single is good, but the production on the vocals is bothering me.

Dexter Ward- III I’m really at a loss for words over why I hated this on first listen and never gave it another spin last year. It’s very good actually. For some reason, I thought Ross the Boss was in this, which also shows that maybe my listening to it was only halfway committed, and I likely was sampling the new Ross the Boss material around the same time. Anyway, this is way better than the RtB album, and I’m going to be listening to this for a while. Same vocalist from Battleroar’s “To Death and Beyond...” but somehow I didn’t recognize him. Either way, I do like his vocals a lot.

Incantation- Diabolical Conquest Despite my deep love of death metal, especially the older bands of the sub genre, Incantation never really did much for me. Immolation on the other hand, blows my mind. Given that these two bands are considered somewhat similar, it’s weird how Incantation never really grabbed me as much. I guess the doomier approach they took strikes me as a bit boring. But this album is quite exceptional, and it is such a shame I’m just now getting to it. I believe this will stay in my library indefinitely. Even the doomy bits are well written and executed on this one.

It is really a good album - loved it to death last year, even if I had same inital reaction as you. (Ok, did not hate it - I liked it well enough and then moved on after a listen or two and for forgot about it.
I hope that they will release more albums in this style.

Nakkeknaekker: KrigA death metal demo, by a band my nephew is playing in. It is rough around the edges but I like it well enough. Will be interesting to what they can grow into if they keep at it. While I mostly despair at the tastes of the younger generations, it sure is nice that there still are some that turn to the dark side.

Drawn and Quartered- Congregation Pestilence I really just can't stop playing this record. I keep meaning to listen to other things, but for the past few weeks I just keep coming back to it. This one is really up there as one of the best death metal offerings of the year. I struggle to imagine where I'd place it around that latest Cannibal Corpse record, as it was so good as well. Either way, the two records are probably sitting at the top two spots of my favorite records of 2021 list so far, which is not what I was expecting given that they are both death metal and I have really found myself a bit more diversified than I was as a listener 5 years ago when I mostly preferred listening to death and thrash metal. With that being said, I'm wondering what are the good doom metal records I'm missing out on this year. I've heard the new one by Wheel, which is pretty good. But I feel I'm surely missing something. I want a good doom record!
