Havukruunu - Kuu Erkylän Yllä There is simply something magical about Havukruunu and their approach to music making. It possesses such strength and cinematic feel without being overly produced and just simply fills me with an energy no other band does. I’ve come to realizing that this band have easily worked their way into my list of favorite bands. The last two full-lengths were absolutely stunning, and this EP (while I do wish it was another full-length) extends that magic a while longer. And as silly as it is, the thunder and horse cries in track four really just make the track so much cooler. What is it about the sounds of storm, battle, and horses that just amplifies the coolness factor of a Metal song? Hahaha! I’ll be listening further for a long while on this record.

IRONFLAME- Blood Red Victory (2020) I wanted to hear this last year but I forgot and just now got to it. One listen through so far, but it's really a solid release. I feel like last year traditional Heavy Metal was more solid than it is this year. This year I'm mostly finding excellent Death Metal, it seems. haha
Exhumed- Worming- EP (2021) I like it a lot, but it's rather short. This one feels more raw or at least less polished than recent releases, which is awesome because it makes it feel more chaotic and more in-line with their earlier releases.
1914- Where Fear and Weapons Meet (2021) Wow, I have heard their previous album as well, and this one for me is a step up. I get that this band is all about attention to detail, and now that I've gone through it with careful reading of the lyrics and everything, it's just a really satisfying overall experience. Sometimes I feel the lyrical feel isn't very natural, likely due to the telling of story, but what is lost in that also allows for newfound interest in storylines. And the cover song near the end is awesome! Somehow, though, the most amazing track for me is the non-metal track, which has such excellent harmonica playing, and when this gentle bass drum motif enters it just feels so powerful, even though it's soft. So powerful, these compositions.

1914- Where Fear and Weapons Meet (2021) Wow, I've returned to binging this album. It's crazy how much this album has grown on me. And even more, it's cool how a band can lead to my increased interest in areas such as history of World War 1. The lyrics give way to so much insight about inner struggles and sentiments that existed among soldiers in that time in such a way that makes me want to learn more about them and the times and conditions. Admittedly, I hated history in school, so I of course remembered almost nothing about WWI, but this now feels like a second chance to learn more. Fascinating album. I might have to do a review of it. Musically it hits a lot different areas, making it dynamic, while at the same time musically it doesn't bring a new feeling at all. The lyrics really make it stand out more than anything for me.

I’ve only streamed the promo (Napalm Records promos are stream-only on Haulix, which is not the greatest platform for streaming). I really liked the previous one. I’m waiting for Bandcamp Friday this week to get it.

Won't sit down and list them all, but I decided to blow through the discography of Budgie. Interesting band with some killer material, though their dive into a commercial sound later on did them zero favors.

Can think of many bands that went down the commercial road at some point - but not really all that many, where it ended well.

Best I got is Rush and maybe Blue Oyster Cult. In terms of Metal, though, I got nothing.

Fear of God-Within the Veil Gothic Thrash with one of the most out of control and bizarre vocal performances I've ever heard was not on my bingo card for Overlooked Masterworks, but here we are.
Icecross-Icecross Protometal from freaking Iceland of all places released in freaking 1973 of all times that has instances of freaking blastbeats of all things. The hell is in their water where they keep making surprising Metal over the years?
