I remember the band being highly recommended back in the day and I found them quite boring. I really don't get it. It just sounds like they hacked off bits of better bands and slapped them together without any real thought on how the riffs go together to make songs. I keep hearing how they're like Running Wild or Iron Maiden as Melodic Death Metal, and I just find myself wishing I was listening to them instead, since they could write interesting songs to go with their melodic sensibilities.

Marduk- Opus Nocturne This is more an effort for me to find more appreciation of black metal than anything else, as I generally don't have much desire to hear it. But Marduk have always interested me more than most BM bands. This sounds really solid, as I was expecting. One thing I especially love about this album so far though is the fact that the bass is quite audible, even if it doesn't musically stand out for being different from the guitars. Just the fact that I can hear it in the mix quite easily is something that I like.

Baest: Marie Magdalene Bear Mace: Charred Field Of Slaughter Deadflesh: World War III Bolt Thrower: ...For Victory Benediction: Transcend the Rubicon
Perhaps I should consider modifying my belief that I don't like Death Metal...

More death: Dawn of Demise: A Force Unstoppable Humanity Delete/ Carnal Garden split Gatecreeper: Deserted Baest: Venenum Yay for death metal converts! Yeah, there’s some great stuff out there. I was totally going to suggest you listen to Bolt Thrower a while back after finding out which death metal albums you liked a few days back. You might also like the Cause of Death album by Obituary. I will say though, I cannot stand Gatecreeper. It hits me as extremely generic and uninteresting. That being said, they’re super popular, so I may just never get it. Glad you’re giving some good death metal albums a chance. Do yourself a favor and hear Morbid Angel’s Altars of Madness, please. It was a life changer for me in a big way.

In an effort to grow my appreciation for Black metal, I am mostly only diving into Black metal that was suggested by you all in the thread I made for it. Here are the albums I have started with and my thoughts so far.
Summoning - Oath Bound Well, I have to be honest, the atmospheric qualities here are definitely unique. I especially love the inclusion of tuba in a track. However, I guess I just find myself hungry for a riff. Like, where are the riffs? The atmospherics and unique instrumentation really carry this. I think I probably am just not putting the right expectations on this album. That being said, I've only gotten one listen through, and I am sure a few more listens will help me to change my feeling. And I do intend to listen at least one more time through.
Finsterforst - Rastlos Wow, that was epic! The black metal feels were quite lite in my opinion on this one, as the folk metal aspect was quite pronounced, and the vocals are more akin to folk metal in my opinion as well. But regardless, it is a really nice record. I wish it was shorter, but the length does not feel unnecessary. Even the 20+ minute final track which seems daunting ahead of time when glancing at run-times has a lot of repetition, but the repetition actually did not take away from the experience, and emboldened it in a unique way I wasn't expecting. Really cool album!
Abbath- Outstrider Perhaps my favorite black metal record I've checked out from the recommendations. This fits most with what I feel I most like in black metal, as it is riff-driven and doesn't mess around with atmospherics. I also love the feeling that this release incorporates stylistic elements of non-black metal subgenres. This one I anticipate spending much more time with in the future.
Thanks for those recommendations. I'm going to continue through the whole list of them in the coming days/hours.

Malice Divine-Malice Divine One of those Black/Death bands that take after Skeletonwitch and Dissection. More riffs than songs, unfortunately.
Plague Weaver-Ascendant Blasphemy Black/Doom with suffocating atmosphere and killer riffs. Fuck yeah.

Kvaen - The Funeral Pyre I enjoyed this a bit, although at times I felt it was a bit long (despite the fact it's actually not that long of an album). I guess shorter song lengths would have made this a much more fun listen for me, but I really do appreciate the more riff-forward approach to black metal here. The energy is great, musicianship is tight, and the energy is quite high on it. I'll likely return to it in some time.
Nocternity- Harps of the Ancient Temples This kind of gives me Burzum vibes a little, which I'm not sure if I like or not. I can certainly appreciate a less intense pace and energy. It's super cold and feels very authentic. The bareness to it due to the lack of blast beats everywhere and everything open it up for more subtleties which are the kind of things I enjoy about late Inquisition work. I think a few more spins with this record will prove to be a very rewarding investment for me. Everything sounds great here, just not terribly eventful. I love being able to hear bass on black metal records like I can here. Nice suggestion here.

Yeah, I gathered that after finishing listening to this one and seeing that you guys have already reviewed a few of their albums. I most certainly will check out En Oria soon, as it sounds from the reviews more up my alley. The latest album is good, but it really doesn’t vary the tempo in a way that brings the furious energy I was somewhat expecting and hoping for.

Raven - Metal City
Settled into the "Motorhead groove" of releasing very similar, yet satisfying albums
Vhaldemar - Straight to Hell
Typical yet fun crunchy, Euro power metal. Not as good as their last one but still entertaining

Frozen Soul- Crypt of Ice I decided to take a short detour from my black metal discovery path for a moment to check out this death metal release from a week ago. Couldn't resist checking them out with all the posts about how this band is the new BOLT THROWER. Despite that possibility as far as comparisons go, I am not a huge Bolt Thrower fan myself. I have yet to find what really makes them so special myself, but perhaps it's due to the fact that I prefer faster tempos in death metal than theirs. I will say, this Frozen Soul album here isn't bad. I kind of want to associate the band and their sound with that new era of old school death worshipping bands that also have an odd hardcore tinge to them, which I kind of hate. For this reason, I can't stand Gatecreeper. But this is much better than Gatecreeper, and worth hearing. The band somewhat lives up to the concept they seem to be following with the cold icy themes. Even the vocals are soaked in effects that make them sound as if they're coming from a very cold place.
