Maybe I’m just bored and wanted to see what you all like. But also, I’m really in a death metal mood. What are your top 5 death metal albums of all time? My list changes sometimes but here are mine, mostly in order.
1. Morbid Angel- Altars of Madness I can listen to this album endlessly. I don’t always reference MA as one of my favorite bands, but this is without a doubt my favorite death metal record of all time.
2. Entombed- Left Hand Path Yep, I love the thrash death metal buzzsaw fest this album is. I still remember the first time hearing the title track almost two decades ago and not understanding anything except the ending. Boy did that change with time... I remember thinking this band sounded so sloppy and out of sync, but actually it’s just genius.
3. Morbid Angel- Covenant The only band who would crack my top 5 more than once. This album is death metal the way I think when I imagine what death metal sounds like. And it’s good everything.
4. Deicide- Deicide Yeah, I chose this one over Legion. For me, an easy choice. I love the intensity of this album, as well as the low production.
5. Gruesome- Savage Lands Okay, so this album is much newer than everything else on my list. This band gets an annoying amount of hate. Gruesome recreated the Death Leprosy/Spiritual Healing sound flawlessly in my opinion with this record. Why I don’t think it’s worthy of hate for being unoriginal? Because I think those two Death records were the best and I wanted more like it. Furthermore, Gruesome created new songs in the style of those in every way, matching vocal approach, riffing, and even lyric approach. It’s a really well-done work paying homage to one of the greatest death metal bands of all time.
Surprised by the lack of Death or Possessed on my list? Sometimes I’d put Seven Churches in my top 3 death metal albums list. Death usually would always fit just outside my top 5. I love Possessed.

Not a DM fan, so think I will sit this one out. (Have not even heard any of your top five )

Not a DM fan, so think I will sit this one out. (Have not even heard any of your top five ) Lol, the first four of these I heard the first time when I wasn’t a death metal fan and I hated them. I obviously don’t feel that way now though. If you were to try an album, that Gruesome album is great, and has very good guitar performances most Metal fans can likely get behind. If you’re curious, that is.

Not a DM fan, so think I will sit this one out. (Have not even heard any of your top five ) I was never a fan either, in fact bands like Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, and Deicide drove me away from the scene in the early 90s. That said, I have come to appreciate death metal and yes, even enjoy the genre since I joined The Crypt in 2008. Here are some albums that helped me, as a non-death metal fan, realize that good metal is good metal, regardless of style. Give them a try if you want to start dipping your toes in the death metal pool
Horrified - Allure of the Fallen Caligula - Ex Deo Sinister - Syncretism Death - Leprosy Amon Amarth - Deceiver of the Gods

metalmike, that Sinister album had me hooked the year it came out. A really solid album indeed! And Death’s Leprosy is and always has been my favorite of their discography. If I hadn’t put Gruesome at #5 on my list, it would have been Leprosy, as these albums sound very similar. I just happen to like the way Gruesome’s album sounds more. Maybe a blasphemous thing to say, but it’s true.

Hey Thanks both - will try to check out some of those.
But actually I have already started my slow journey towards DM appreciation, the Danish band Baest got me started.
But having heard a total of perhaps (?) 8-10 death metal albums, and none of the genre classics, I feel that I can't really declare all time greats.
But some of what I have heard, and enjoyed, are: Gatecreeper - Deserted Bear Mace - Charred Field of Slaughter Baest - Veneum Humanity Delete - Anthems of Doom (Their part of the split with Lethal Onslaught) Deadflesh - Sic Semper Tyranis
I don't really count Amount Amarth as Death Metal - but like a lot of their stuff as well.

It's really tough for me to list my Top 5 Death Metal albums of all-time, yet even harder to put them in order from best to worse. But let me try anyway...
01. MORBID ANGEL - Altars of Madness (the ULTIMATE DEATH METAL ALBUM NO. 1. for me!! It has everything in it that a Death Metal album should contain. It's no wonder either why so many Death Metal maniacs rank this album so high on their lists!!)
02. DEATH - Leprosy (I have always liked the band's 2nd album most. It has a fine match between technicality and brutality of Death Metal. Chuck (R.I.P.) was the man...
03. POSSESSED - Seven Churches (this album truly blew my mind away when I heard the album back in 1985. The album's full of evil and wicked riffs, a demonic vocals of Jeff, etc. - and it was all-round a very satanic album that almost scared me away when I first listened to it. A classic Death Metal release for sure, no more no less).
04. ENTOMBED - Left Hand Path (wow... that very special downtuned and distorted guitar sound of both Alex's and Uffe's in the band's sound was something truly unique and original in Death Metal at that time that made Entombed's debut such one of the finest cornerstones of the whole DM-genre. The Swedes truly brought their own spices into the Death Metal genre that changed the Death Metal sound for good. Left Hand Path is still the unbeatable Swedish Death Metal album of all-time for me...
05. DEICIDE - Legion (these Floridian Death Metal masters own Reign in Blood. 'nuff said, I think).

I love those picks. I knew we had similar tastes in classic death metal, but I didn’t know you shared the same feelings about Altars of Madness. It didn’t surprise me you also picked Left Hand Path over Clandestine. I feel I really need to give Legion another run though. I liked it, but not more than Deicide’s debut. Maybe I’m missing something. Your comment suggesting a comparison with Reign in Blood struck me as interesting. Perhaps if I revisit it with that in mind, I’ll have a different perspective of the album. Leprosy and Seven Churches enter my top 5 periodically. All are so good. Perhaps it is sacrilegious to put Gruesome’s Death-worship above Death in my list, but I really love Savage Lands. Haha

Yes, I remember two of us sharing pretty similar tastes, especially in Death Metal. I should go back to Deicide's debut though to see how it was like when I listened to it last time most probably more than 10 years ago...

Hey, this is not bad actually. Hmm.. Why I don’t think it’s worthy of hate for being unoriginal? I think the whole "it must be super original to be worthwhile" camp is so tiring. Who cares if another band has done something in a similar style? If it is done well, gets my head nodding and put a smile on my bloody face, that is more than enough for me. If I read one more doom review that goes a "this sounds a bit like Candlemass. But it is not Candlemass, so therefore it is shit", I swear I am going to scream.
