In the best albums thread, we have discussed the albums that were actually released in 2020.
That is all well and fine.
But a huge part of the the allure of being a metal fan, is the vast treasure trove of history, stretching back 50 years by now, and just waiting to be discovered.
So which recommendable older bands and/or records did you discover in 2020?
Some of my notable 2020 discoveries are listed below.
What are yours?
Albatross: While I had heard this band before, on their 2012 split with Vestal Claret, their 2015 album Fear from the Skies was a pleasant surprise and have been on heavy rotation in 2020. It is a double concept album. Not in the sense that it is over long - but that it has two distinct story arches contained with the 8 track album. Apart from good storytelling, this is great, fun heavy metal, with plenty of great guitar (They had a 3-guitar line-up on this) and some, erhm, distinct vocals. BandcampHerzel: Their great two-track 2015 demo, Unis dans la gloire, is epic metal done very right. They have now been signed by Gates of Hell records, so keep an eye out for an album in 2021 - I know I will. BandcampSteel Tormentor: This Irish band has apparently been going since 1998, and have released a string of demos as well as two full-lengths. Their latest proper album, Return of a King (2015) is a very enjoyable slab of heavy metal. They have released a live album and a demo compilation in 2016 and MA lists them as active. So fingers crossed, that we will see more from these guys. BandcampVortex:An old Dutch band dating back to 1979, playing traditional heavy metal. Their 1986 debut full length, Open the Gate, are a good old school heavy metal record, and I can't help thinking, that if the world had known about Vortex back then, they would have been counted among the solid bands of the eighties. (They have reformed in 1998 and made 5 albums more, but I have not heard these.) Bandcamp
(Yeah, I know we have a somewhat similar thread in the "Name ONE long-running band" thread but this is more aimed at sharing the goods on underground / lesser known bands and their great albums.)

Oh wow, this thread direction is hard for me to contribute to anymore because I spend most of my time trying to keep up with new releases, and hardly look back at older ones. When I do look back at older releases, it is because I am looking into well-received albums that I felt I needed to get into my library or at least have a sample. A few years ago, I used to be all about discovering older hidden gems, and discovered many, especially within the old school death metal area.
But while this is far from an album that gets little recognition, I still would like to share just because it's awesome. This year I discovered Borknagar's previous two albums, which I had never heard before. Most notably, True North I spent a lot of time with before moving onto Winter Thrice. Although I had a pretty high level top 20 albums of the year list, I would easily put True North and Winter Thrice in my top 10 this year had those been released this year. What amazing records! I remember getting True North in February due to seeing how well received it was and not having checked out Borknagar for several years. I loved the album so much that I listened through the album every day for two whole months! It's funny how the track I least cared for initially (the closing track, "Voices") turned out to be one of the catchiest and powerful songs I heard all year by the 30th time hearing it.
Again, Borknagar are not hidden gem masters, as they are quite established, even if they are not as familiar to the metal masses as many other bands within their wheelhouse (Enslaved's popularity seems triple that of Borknagar, despite my current observation that perhaps Borknagar are the better songwriters in my opinion).

... I spend most of my time trying to keep up with new releases ...
It has become such a massive flood, that one can't really keep up. Oh well, first world problems and all, but still.
Borknagar I do not know, will check them out.

Found this recently. Slam Death Metal (basically uber-Brutal Death Metal with slamming riffs) that uses a banjo for its leads. Kind of cool, actually.
