Steves tape-trading thesis.pdf (901.21 KB) Thought to share this very in-depth and informative file with all of you who have any interest in the past tape trading times... It was done by a guy named Steve Jones who I met back in 2016.

I had no idea this was going on back in the day. Grew up in a small northern town away from everything. But the friend who got me into metal did put a lot of stuff on tape for me. We'd spend hours at his place in the evening either dubbing albums or a compilation of songs.

I was trading tapes like a maniac from the mid-eighties to the mid-nineties ... recording tapes 6-8 hours nearly every day at my parent's house (when I started) during my early teenager days. I was basically connected to every corner of the world, having same type of crazy traders as me from such countries as Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, USA, Canada, Europe and Australia. Now, when thinking of all this afterwards, it was just fuckin' crazy...

I bought a couple of demos from ads in magazine's like Kick Ass Monthly back in the day. Send a couple of bucks in the mail, get a tape back. One was At War's demo, which was totally pro. I think it was $4. The other was a band called Mannslaughter. It was $2 and recorded on the cheapest blank cassette you could find and sounded like crap. What was I expecting for $2? I never traded dubbed stuff through the mail though I made a TON of tapes for my car and friends

I also did that a lot... ordering demos (dozens of them actually), straight from bands through some magazines like Metal Forces, Kerrang!, etc., some of these demos being from such names as Sindrome, Phantasm, Death, Legacy (came Testament), Oblivion (renamed as Obliveon later), Nihilist/ Entombed, Carnage (Swe), Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, Severance, Morbid Angel, Nocturnus, Forbidden, Deströyer 666, etc. etc. etc. I have sold 75% of these demos away on places like eBay, Discogs, etc., many many years ago though. Fun times...
