I like this stoner/proto-doom band quite a bit. They sound interesting to say the least...

Dissection
Been a while since I listened to them. Easy to forget how crazy talented this band was. Shame that it ended the way it did...

I also listened to them a lot this week and last week, the first two albums only. I really love their sound, and it is easily one of my favorite sounds in black metal, which is why I love Watain so much. A couple of Watain albums really followed that Dissection sound quite nicely.

Honestly, I never checked out Watain. I will have to rectify that... Check out the album Lawless Darkness, which has a few absolute killer tunes in the first half (Reaping Death being one of my favorites), and the album Casus Luciferi, which is a shorter album than the first one I mentioned, which is notable given Lawless Darkness is quite long.

Taking advantage of my Apple Music trial to check out a lot of albums I wanted to hear but hadn’t yet.
Glacier- The Passing of Time Fantastic album. I must buy it without a doubt.
Therion- Leviathan Now I only had one listen to this and the only other material I’ve heard was the Lemuria and Sirius B which I bought way back when they released as a double album pack. I’ve always been on the fence with this band because I am a professional violinist. In some way the symphonic metal sensibilities play into my interests. But for me, this band’s efforts mostly sound too inorganic and cheesy. I’ve never found much redeeming qualities in the majority of symphonic metal. However, it could also be said that the performances on this new album here are quite strong. If you’ve liked this band before, you’ll probably like this one too. For me, it was just fun to drop in and see how it compares. Not an album for me, I’ll stick to performing actual symphonies. But it is a cool (and cheesy) album.
Sodom- Genesis XIX Well, I must not be a Sodom fan. Nothing they’ve released really gets me going, and this was no different, although it may be my favorite thing I’ve heard of their discography.
Testament- Legacy I had heard this one before, but I wanted to hear it again after such a long time I shelved it deciding it was inferior to the debut albums of my favorite thrash bands. Wow, this album is fantastic actually. I should have spun it a few more times a few years ago before putting it away. The writing is so good here.

I am a professional violinist. Oh? Cool. Violin should be used more often in metal. Not the symphonic stuff, but the way Battleroar and Earthen Grave has used it was good. Sodom- Genesis XIX Well, I must not be a Sodom fan. Nothing they’ve released really gets me going, and this was no different, although it may be my favorite thing I’ve heard of their discography. Have you heard Descision Day by them? Great thrash album, that.

metalmike and doomyguy, I did check out Decision Day’s premiere tracks back before it released and I also didn’t care for what I heard, but given your commentary there, I will likely return to try that out as well. OT: I’ve been using these days to get familiar with albums I’ve either been dying to check out for a long time or albums I feel I should get to know. Bolt Thrower- For Victory Okay, I have had this one for a long time but I never developed a deep affinity for BT’s style of death metal (slow for my tastes). However, this really is a highlight in their discography and I enjoyed it more this time around. Still, it doesn’t hit me super deep, but it’s an enjoyable listen with some quality riffs. Evil Invaders- Feed Me Violence I’ve no explanation for it, but I’ve been dying to hear this release for more than two years and never got to it. I am a huge fan of speed metal. This really doesn’t disappoint at all. These guys are super talented and energetic in a run and addicting way. Great album! I recently decided that I am going to run through the whole Bathory discography in chronological order, as I have yet to develop a deep love for their releases, but I do have much respect for them, and I’ve only heard three of them from front to back. I’ve just finished listening through the first Bathory album and while it’s pretty rough, I quite enjoy it. It is one I previously listened to a few years ago before I moved to China. Not as favorable for me as Blood Fire Death (my current favorite) but I like it. I especially love the song “Sacrifice,” although I mostly like it because of the badass cover Death Breath made.

Borknagar - True North Aria - Generator of Evil Maudiir - Le temps peste Diamond Head - The Coffin Train Funeral Storm/Synteleia - The Ancient Calling Eximperitus - Šahrartu Sacrifice - Torment in Fire True North would have been a top 3 album for me if I had discovered it the year it released. Damn, those first three tracks especially really hit the spot! I listened to that album everyday last year for almost two whole months back when COVID began. Also, Sacrifice’s Torment in Fire I really enjoy. Great time to listen with that new interview Luxi did with the band. I love their early stuff. Hopeful to enjoy that new record sometime soon.
