Immolation- Acts of God (2022) I don't really need to say anything, huh? This one is likely well known to all of us. But I must say, this is the most I've been into an album of Immolation in several years. I enjoyed their previous album quite a bit, but if I were to compare it with this one, this one is soooooo much stronger in my opinion. I'm not familiar with some of their middle albums, so I'm missing some stuff, but this one for me is about the same level as their more famous early stuff, I'd say.
Pure Wrath- Hymn to the Woeful Hearts (2022, Atmospheric Black Metal) Wow. I've gotta say, any time I hear of a band coming from Indonesia, my expectations are always quite low. The country is full of really low-grade goregrind and gutter trash bands with nearly unlistenable production values. But Pure Wrath? This sounds nothing like that. This is so clean that it might be too clean, but regardless, this is also the most mature writing I've ever heard knowingly from a band of Indonesia. It's a bit melodic, with a big flair for the epic at times. Very emotive album. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for some Atmospheric Black Metal. It doesn't sound evil enough for me, as I prefer my Black Metal to sound evil, but hey, it still sounds quite great.

Agreed - thank you for sharing Doublegeddon here. Hope they will get around to making an lp at some point. Combed through their Twitter and found a post claiming they were working on one. Don't know much more outside of that, unfortunately. Their album just dropped on Bandcamp:

Gallowbraid-Ashen Eidolon Ok, someone needs to tell Sargon about this if he doesn't already know. This was a project from the guy in Visigoth who also did Caladan Brood, and it's basically a mixture of the two with Agalloch to make something as great as the best of all three. Holy shit.
Messa-Close Outside of a baffling Black/Thrash song that doesn't even last a minute, this is easily their most audacious and captivating work to date.

Outside of a baffling Black/Thrash song that doesn't even last a minute, this is easily their most audacious and captivating work to date. Jake Rogers, who sings for Visigoth and Caladan Brood, put out that Gallowbraid prior to Caladan Brrod and held it back because he wasn’t sure if it was what he wanted to put out there. After Caladan Brood, people started calling for it so he put it out there.

The fact he wrote it when he was 15 astounds me. How the hell does someone make an album comparable to the best of their influences at that age?

Deathhammer- Electric Warfare I love it. Fast, fun, and they even tucked in a few slower riffs this time around. The vocals are fun and bring me back to the first two albums of Vulture, which were much better than the new album in my opinion. Great Deathhammer album.
Amorphis- Halo I always knew about this band but every time I sampled their work I was hearing songs with a lot of clean singing, and at the time I just didn’t appreciate the guy’s voice. Now I realize I was wrong. His voice is great and just needed to grow on me. In addition, the death growls are excellent and low. Songwriting is quite engaging on this one. I believe it was MetalMike who reviewed this one which made me curious.
Martyr- Planet Metalhead Another one I checked out because of the review here. I wasn’t familiar with the band. At the end of the first listen, I’m still not sure I know this band’s style yet. Seemed to me like there were a lot of influences being thrown around. I often wondered if there were several vocalists because the style was all over the place. “Children of the Night” had me thinking of the stylings of Dio while other tracks had moments of James Hetfield, King Diamond, and a few others. It really almost didn’t work for me. But by the end I feel compelled to give it more listens.
Blackslash- No Steel for Future My first time listening to this band, despite several times searching for them. Turned out I spelled their name wrong as “Backslash” every time I searched them...haha! Sounds somewhat like Traveler to my ears, which is a great thing. However, I prefer Traveler. Good album though.
Midnight- Let there be Witchery Super fun album! I agree with MetalMike in his review that the faster songs, for me especially “Nocturnal Molestation” (lol try telling your friends at work you recommend a song with THAT title! Haha) being the standout track. “More Torment was a slower track that I really enjoyed too, although I can already play the riff it’s so simple and I don’t really play guitar. Loved the cowbell entrance in that song near the end. First Midnight album I truly enjoyed. Been jamming it for a week and a half now.
Wedrujacy Wiatr- Zorzysta Staje Oćma My current review project for the site. I have probably been able to write this review for a week or more but I’m afraid to write the review because then I’ll have to move on to something else! Haha! This might be my favorite record of the year so far, something I wasn’t expecting at all. First time going through it it was just too long. Now I want it to last forever. Atmospheric black metal. A projection of nature, not evil black metal at all. Just really, really engaging and spiritual black metal. Super good.

Deathspell Omega-The Long Defeat
You know those twangy interludes between dissonant riffing you often get with this kind of thing? Imagine an entire album of that with bad vocals and post-black/pop melodies and you get this album. What the hell happened?

Deathspell Omega-The Long Defeat You know those twangy interludes between dissonant riffing you often get with this kind of thing? Imagine an entire album of that with bad vocals and post-black/pop melodies and you get this album. What the hell happened? I'm very fond of the French Avant-garde Black Metal acts lately, and have been digging into a lot of bands in the scenes over there in recent months. I liked some of Deathspell Omega's older stuff, so I will check this one out. Your description is certainly not the most glowing endorsement...HAHA! But I must say I am sampling the second track, "Eadem, Sed Aliter" at the moment, and the first part at the beginning was a total snooze-fest. The middle, however, when it got faster and and wildly out of control...that was awesome! I hope there is more of that side of it, but I do somewhat feel interested in what they've achieved here on this track. I enjoyed the melodic touch at the end of the track too. There is a bit much noise in this, which I'm very hot or cold about. I can see where this may be a polarizing EP. Glad you posted about it, because I didn't know about its release.

The biggest surprise is the gang shouts. I almost admire the audacity of adding those, I'll admit.

Alright, I just listened to that Deathspell Omega start to finish. The bookends of the album are the worst parts in my opinion, with the title track being the standout at the center of the album. The band really played up the atmosphere on these tracks, and ultimately the main parts I enjoyed were the blasting, faster parts. Those moments feel badass, as the band executes those types of sections in powerful ways with just enough unique flavor to make their approach different from other black metal bands.
A little bit too much lower energy bits on here perhaps, although I also found those a bit interesting to listen to. To be honest, I feel like I’ll feel about this album the same way I felt about Enslaved’s album E. I did not really appreciate E much at the start. Fast forward two years and I listen to E again and I actually think it is a phenomenal record, and surprisingly my favorite Enslaved album. I had a feeling while listening to this Deathspell EP that it’s one of those kinds of records for me. I bet this will be much, much better with some time.

Obituary-Slowly We Rot
Preparing for an upcoming show with them. Got people telling me that this album is dull and the vocals always sucked. As a decrepit 20-something, I just don't understand this generation.

As a decrepit 20-something, I just don't understand this generation. Great album. I was listening to this one last week in fact. Not dull at all And I've always loved Tardy's vocals. I was listening to this one because a new album by the band Abyssus has very old school vocals in the style of Chuck Schuldiner mixed with a bit of Tardy of Obituary. I really enjoyed those vocals, even though at this point it's not original. Slowly We Rot has aged very well.

Midnight really stepped it up this time after kind of fucking around on the first few. Martyr is a weird band, been around a long time but the new one is enjoyable because it isn’t “typical”. I like the new Amorphis quite a bit even though it probably isn’t what fans of their early stuff might want.
