Doomsword: Doomsword Doomsword: The Eternal Battle Doomsword: Let Battle Commence Doomsword: My Name Will Live On
On a bit of a binge. Doomsword is one of my favourite bands, not a bad release so far. Wonder when the new one will drop. Seems there are quite a bit of activity right now, so perhaps we will be lucky and get an album soon. (fingers crossed.)

Iron Maiden - Senjutsu
Some really good ideas, but man, the repetition...

Sekoria- Seelenwanderung (2022 release) I wasn't expecting too much since there is seemingly little buzz about them, but this was a pleasant surprise. Epic Black Metal here with varied songwriting, melodic touch without sacrificing heaviness, and some generally great ideas overall. When I describe it, it almost feels like I'm trying to describe Stormkeep, but this sounds different from Stormkeep. Really worth checking out, and part of the excellent start to 2022 I'm experiencing!
Eliminator- Ancient Light (2022 as well) Wow, if this is the quality I can expect to see more of in this year, I already have high expectations that 2022 will blow 2021 out of the water. This is so good, it could have probably been in my top 10 albums of 2021 if it released earlier. At first I thought these vocals had way too much reverb and that it would annoy me (the first moment of vocals is a bit of a shock at first, honestly), but no, this is great. A bit of a Maiden/Priest flavor here. Definitely going to be spinning this album A LOT this year.

Been blowing through Incantation's and Nile's discography lately to prime for an upcoming show. Never did all of Incantation before, so I can now confidently say they are a band that exists.

I appreciate Incantation more than I like them, but there are a couple of really great albums in my opinion. As for Nile, I’m a big fan. Annihilation of the Wicked probably remains my favorite album, although I loved all of their releases around that time as well as the last full length. Sounds like you’ve got a cool show to go to. Very nice!

I thought I’d be able to listen to Sanguisugabogg, but nope. I find that stuff boring. I Am, I’ve not heard of but I have yet to find any deathcore that could bring me to like anything of the style since I stopped listening to All Shall Perish back many years ago.

Been sitting at a Tim Horton's doing report card write-ups for my 100+ orchestra and MYP Music students while getting in some very quality listening time with some new releases I have started streaming.
Scream Maker- Bloodking (2022, Heavy Metal) This one is full of promise, and frequently sounds like lost recordings of early-mid era Iron Maiden, with the vocalist sometimes sounding quite similar to Bruce Dickinson at times as well. There is one FATAL flaw here, which is that the album is way too long at an hour and 7 minutes over 15 tracks. They needed to cut this down to 35-40 minutes in length and save the leftover for some other release or something. There is fat to be trimmed, but also some great tracks, so it's a rather complicated release for me. Definitely worth checking out, but not a full-length I'd recommend sitting through in one sitting.
Generation Kill- MKUltra (2022, Thrash Metal) This one was pretty cool, although after a while a lot of it started sounding the same. The first track featured Gary Holt, which I'm assuming is why there was a ton of whammy bar foreplay near the end lol. There were a couple of surprises by the end, with a few attempts at clean singing, which somewhat took me out of the experience at times while at other times enhancing the experience due to the aforementioned sameness quality in the riffing and songwriting. Overall, worth a look.
Malefic Throne- Malefic Throne EP (2022, Death Metal) Well, just look at this three-piece's members and you already know what to expect. These guys come from Morbid Angel (Steve Tucker!), Perdition Temple and Angelcorpse, among others. In fact, two-thirds of this band are of Angelcorpse. If you like old school Floridian Death metal of the stylings of those aforementioned bands, it's impossible to dislike this EP. I love the frantic tempos and tempo shifts, wild blasting drums, and wild guitar work that fills this thing. I listened to the tracks 3 times through on repeat before moving on. Great stuff, and I hope to see a full-length soon.

Only in a different way here, in that these tracks are not generally overwhelmingly long. 4-5 minute songs. Not an onslaught of 8+ minute songs. But otherwise, yes. Lol

Doing more computer work and as such, getting more quality new release listening time in!
Infected Plague- Horrors of the Terminal Earth Decent death metal, but far from special...or memorable. Skippable overall.
Saxon- Carpe Diem They’ve still got a bit of power in them after this many years. Quite incredible when you think about their career and all. Pretty good, although some songs fall a little flat. The title track in fact does not really have the catchiness it deserves.
Vorga- Striving Towards Oblivion A pretty cool black metal album from a band I’ve yet to listen to. The song is a bit dense at times, and one of the things I remember most is that they took a few unusual drum patterns to a few of these songs, giving a unique flavor. I’ll be listening to this one more to see how it sticks.
Darvaza- Descending into Perdition No frills black metal album with decent songwriting, although nothing quite special either, unless you look at the track that goes more for the epic feel in “The Second Woe.” The last track opens with the ending to an orchestral piece that I’m dying to know the name of...pretty cool way to start a final blasting piece of black metal!
Abysmal Dawn- Nightmare Frontier EP My God, these guys just cannot figure it out! I’m so frustrated by this band because they have the pedigree...but they cannot write good songs! They sometimes get billed as a technical death metal band, but they fail at that too. The resulting songs are always chunky and pedestrian. With so much skill these guys are so on the verge of a breakout release, but then again, they’ve been stuck in that stage for way too many years. It says a lot when they release this EP with two original tracks and two cover songs (In Flames and a Candlemass song) and both are incredibly better than their two originals. In fact, the Candlemass song was done so well with clean singing (not their normal vocal routine at all) that they should probably just become a doom band. Then maybe they’d end up on my radar someday. They actually slayed that Candlemass song!

Abyssus- Death Revival (2022) A Greek Death Metal unit whose sound is deeply influenced by old Death, Possessed, Obituary, and perhaps a bit of Pestilence as well. So far, this is my pick for best Death Metal album of the year, even though it doesn't really bring anything new to the table. You've got a Tardy-esque vocalist who also sounds a bit like early Chuck Schuldiner in a way, the fast, death-thrashy approach of Possessed, and a bit more flavor thrown in there as well. Really good stuff!
Druid Lord- Relics of the Dead (2022) Death Doom that kinda went inside one ear and out the other on the first listen. However, a second listen showed me that this record is rather great! I knew I would like it though, since the previous album was excellent as well. As someone somewhere had mentioned, perhaps in a Youtube comment, the music sounds extremely fitting of the album's decrepit cover, which just feels right here. I've always liked this band because they go from sounding rather simple and predictable to suddenly doing something you didn't expect when you're least expecting it, and yet they never feel too jumpy because it's always done so smoothly. Great band, great album.
Shadow of Intent- Elegy (2022) Hehe, a deathcore album here. I grew tired of Deathcore more than 10 years ago, but this one was getting a lot of buzz, even from fans of more traditional Metal subgenres, so I thought I'd take it for a spin. Massively overproduced to the point it sounds like audio plastic. I will give this one some credit though, as there is quite a lot going on here, and not too much that links this up with deathcore. It was far from breakdown to breakdown. In fact, many songs did not have a single breakdown. The riffing is tight, the vocals are extremely diverse and powerful (dude's been getting some serious attention for his vocal capabilities lately), and the symphonic touches are very good, actually. In the end, I don't see myself listening to this much more, but I gave it a fair chance and it was better than I expected. The dudes are massively talented. I'd love to hear them go for a more straight Death Metal approach with a more natural production.
Maule- Maule (2022) Hadn't heard of this one until you guys were talking about it and it got a review on here. I generally agree with what's been said. I think it's pretty good, but nothing overwhelmingly awesome. It's not going to have the same effect as the first Traveler album, for example. But hey, not a bad debut.
Verikalpa- Tunturihauta (2022) I kinda forgot where I found out about this one, but it's basically like another Ensiferum, with a very small pinch of Black Metal elements, and I do mean VERY SMALL pinch. It's very fun, with some songs being quite memorable. It's a fun, solid ride, but it's missing something for me. Perhaps because this is so much like Ensiferum, I can't help but notice that it's nowhere as fun as Ensiferum, and also lacks an impressive clean vocalist to soar over the energy like the new album of Ensiferum has. Is it unfair to compare the efforts of this album to the new Ensiferum? When you sound so much in the same wheelhouse, I think not.
