Begfried-Romantik 1 I did not have "Folky Epic Metal with freaking pop influences that's actually fresh and exciting" on my 2022 Bingo card, but here we are.
Battlelore-The Return of the Shadow Yep, this is definitely more Battlelore, almost as good as The Last Alliance on first listen, significantly better than Doombound. Also, the cover art is fucking awesome.

Aquilla- Mankind's Odyssey Listening to this one at this moment due to the review I saw this morning when I woke up. It definitely is pretty solid, although I'm not sure it's my cup of tea. I love the dynamic vocals across the album though. Especially on the 6th track, "Rapt in Darkness."
Doldrum- The Knocking, Or the Story of the Sound that Preceded Their Disappearance Zzzzzzzz.... Not for me. Experimental Black Metal that really just doesn't achieve much in my opinion. A big pass here.
Grave Infestation- Persecution of the Living This was a cool Death Metal album with a pinch of Autopsy and a few other flavors. I can't say much about it since I haven't listened to it too deeply, but it's solid without a doubt.
Riot City- Burn the Night Man I love this album. Calgary's Heavy Metal scene is where it's at. This band with Traveler really light up the scene. I noticed this one hasn't been reviewed yet, but it's a great album. I'm gonna review this one, especially since I today caught wind of the fact that they are releasing their second album later this year. Saw a new single from it and it kicked ass. If Traveler, Judas Priest, and those types of bands are up your alley and you haven't heard this album yet, what are you waiting for? haha

Riot City is a band I’d never heard of until I went to see Glacier last weekend and Riot City was the headliner That night. I didn’t stick around for their set but now I kinda wish I did, at least for a song or two. Canada’s trad metal scene is really vibrant right now.

Saor - Origins
A bit less folky than their previous ones, but still very good.

I love Glacier, but I think Riot City are the superior band. Can’t wait to hear the new album later. I’ve been listening to the Riot City debut on repeat for days prepping for a quick review that I’ll write up soon, but yeah, they’re killer. After the release of the debut they picked up a new lead singer who has crazy vocal capabilities. The only worry I have for the new record is that they may have lost some of their raw and honest feel based on the one track I heard. Hopefully the album still has the shine of the debut. For a great indication of what the band can really do, check their song, “The Hunter.”

Panopticon- Collapse Man, I was so excited for this release as their previous record was really strong. But this just doesn’t come close to the previous effort. A bland listen in comparison. Not enough folk music flirtation to keep it as interesting as previous efforts and not nearly as infernal in its blasting sections. Disappointed, I am...
Inhuman Condition- Fearsick A very precise sound, riffs built out of tremolo picking with laser precision. It’s so focused that I almost don’t appreciate it, and yet, the connection to the genuine sound of Massacre still attracts me here. A very solid old school death Metal effort in spirit, much like their last one. This band looks to be very consistent so far. A few of these songs are real bangers. I do however wish it was a little more raw.
Cruentus- Fossilized A surprisingly decent black metal album with a slightly buzzy guitar tone. The riffs on this were much catchier than I was expecting. Deeper analysis on the playing here led to my disappointing realization that the drums are very, very basic. Not so interesting. If they switch drummers and get someone who can play more musically, this band might do very well.
Bleeding Through- This is Love, This is Murderous (2003) An oldie from way back in my past. It may be a metalcore record but this might be the best one out there if you ask me. Been more than 10 or 15 years since I heard this, but mostly it really still holds up for me. I was surprised to see this, a metalcore album, to have such a high rating on Metal-Archives, where metalcore bands rarely fare well, but that may tell you enough about why I still deem this album worth listening to. Loads of genuine thrash, Melodic death, and even pinches of Grindcore make the general sound of this metalcore record. So it’s hardly what you think of when you think of that subgenre.

Gave and am giving some new releases their first spin today:
Traitor- Exiled to the Surface Damn, I’m only a few tracks in on this one but this is a good thrash album in my opinion. Fast energy, good vocals, I’m digging it.
Wormrot- Hiss The new album from Singapore Grindcore veterans. I honestly never heard them before but I see a ton of good press so I gave this a spin. First track didn’t sell me on it, but there is a lot of fun riffing on this and I really liked it quite a lot by the end.
Plague Years- All Will Suffer EP This was a huge surprise for me. Very uninspired album cover from a band I don’t know, but actually this EP fucking rips! Here you get a nice mix of Power Trip and a few touches of Slayer. Really damn good!
Witchery- Nightside Okay, I’ll admit, I heard 3 tracks and stopped. I found this a very uninspired listen. Didn’t want to hear the rest. I get the feeling this band has already run out of its best ideas and is simply going through the motions now. Was not impressed at all.

I grabbed that Traitor promo based on a quick listen to a couple of tracks. Hoping I like the rest I kinda like Witchery. Gave it a couple of spins this morning, will see if my initial impressions change when I go back to it

Gave it a couple of spins this morning, will see if my initial impressions change when I go back to it Yeah, Traitor gave me a great first impression. As for Witchery, it’s very possible it’s one of those records I’d need to sit through 3 or 4 times before I like it, but based on my experience, I wasn’t interested in trying that. I hated how up front the vocals felt, given that the vocals were unremarkable in my opinion. Found the songs very simple. But that’s often true of most releases I hear on a first listen. I know I certainly said all of those things the first time I heard any Venom album. Lol

But did you happen to catch that there’s a George Michael cover on this album?! Track 6, “Careless Whisper.” That was really cool!

KRISIUN - Mortem Solis (love this band... and the album kicks ass!!!) Yes! I listened to it recently too! I liked this album a lot too. The only negative thing I can say is that I don’t think it’s as good as Scourge of the Enthroned, which is the album before this one, released in 2018. That album was so stellar. Killer band, need more credit.
