Yeah, I've been listening to it off and on since I got the promo. Also the new Witchery, which is pretty damn good as well.

Really haven’t had a lot of time to listen to music lately with the start of my new job but I managed a couple of new releases this week:
Amon Amarth- The Great Heathen Army I actually haven’t finished but I think I’m about to start the last track. So far, this might be the least most interest Amon Amarth album I’ve heard, but it also feels like a grower of an album. I felt like the lyrics held more importance than the music this time around, which means I’ll likely get the most out of it when I pay close attention to the lyrics. What I love about this band is that their approach is never all that innovative but the lyrical work and stories being told are usually perfectly placed with the music and really amplify the musical effects. Hopefully I’ll enjoy this one more with more time and analysis of the storylines.
Sedimentum- ...yeah, not gonna type out that album name, just released though... This one sounds pretty good. This is that cavernous death metal stuff akin to Cerebral Rot, Tomb Mold, and the like. I think musically they’re mostly a copy of Cerebral Rot but without the unique drum timbres, which connects them a bit more with the sound of Tomb Mold. I’m not in love with the sound of these bands but the songwriting is pretty good overall and I was mostly pleasantly surprised by this band whom I’d never listened to before.

I like the new Arch Enemy better than the previous one. Very melodic but also no shortage of heaviness and aggression where it's needed, and the vocals keep getting better. I've been stalling on writing the review because once it's reviewed, it's out of rotation. lol

Its been a stoner-doom day for me. When its done well, I'm a real fan of it. Wo Fat- The Singularity Damn. This one just came out not long ago, and it's my first Wo Fat album. Great album to just get lost inside of. You'll be listening and not really feel aware of what's going on and occasionally tap into it and realize there's a shit ton of interesting stuff happening. Absolutely a great Stoner Doom/Rock record. Could end up being a year end list item, depending on how things go, but we'll see about that. Peth- Merchant of Death Another new album, this one from Peth. Stoner/Doom that sounds so much like the first Black Sabbath record at times that it's quite uncanny. So if you love early Sabbath and just want to hear something in that style, can't go wrong with this one. Friends of Hell- Friends of Hell Fantastic debut album from another Doom/Stoner band. This one does a lot of things really well, and the sound of the record is one of the best things my ears have heard all year. Seriously, check out this band's tone and overall sound! Killer! Insecurity- Intruder of Reality Hey luxi, have you heard this yet? I am pretty sure you'll love this one. This is some really excellent crossover Thrash that surprised me a lot, as I wasn't so sold on it at first, but by the end of track three, I was becoming aware that this one will likely stay in rotation with me for a long time. I might have to review this one, since it's quite under the radar.

Listening time reduced a lot for me with the high demands of new job and new living space and whatnot now always being in Shanghai. Today has been my best day for listening, and mostly I fell into a groove of listening to some of my favorite albums of all time instead of my usual habit of listening to new albums.
Autopsy- Mental Funeral Mainly I pulled this one out because I had just learned there’s a new Autopsy album finally coming out and the one track I’ve heard from it really kicks ass! Mental Funeral is one of my favorite albums in the subgenre. It’s funny though how jarring it is to hear the first track after hearing so much modern releases because this is so under-produced compared to modern stuff. But after getting halfway into track two, “In the Grip of Winter,” it’s hard not to love the sound of this record.
Vio-lence- Eternal Nightmare I love how insane Sean sounds, even though I hated it at first. I think a lot of people never get over his vocal approach here, but I’m glad I grew to love it because this is one of the best thrash records of all time. Although I never hear it discussed, I kinda think part of the crossover sound comes from this record. Or at least this record may have been a big influence on the direction of crossover. Just a feeling though. I liked their new EP, but it certainly wasn’t another Eternal Nightmare. Oh well.
Possessed- Seven Churches Very few albums under the name of such a long running band, but none of them suck. This one though...I can’t get over the magic the band pulled off here. So many things on here are still unique to this day. It’s funny how I almost never understood this album due to its rough sound, but now that I understand it so clearly, it’s just a fine gem. I love pretty much everything about this record. When asked to choose between the first Possessed album or the first Death album, I’m in the Possessed camp, always!

Revocation - NetherheavenBlind Guardian - The God MachineBloodbath - Survival of the SickestNile - IthyphallicSavatage - Hall of the Mountain KingHall is such an amazing album. I got into Savatage when Power of the Night came out on Atlantic Records. I hadn’t really discovered independents or imports and it was very different from the other stuff the major labels were putting out. Then they release Fight for the Rock, on which the label clearly tried to soften their sound to broaden their appeal and it did not work. So many bands in the 80s followed this path, some willingly, some not, lost their core fans and didn’t pick up enough new ones and were dropped. This left them with a choice to rebuild in the underground or split up. Somehow, Atlantic kept the band who went back to their core sound but added a bit of classical influence that apparently mollified the label and the result was Hall. I can’t think of another band that bowed to label pressure but survived and and came out on the other side with their deal intact and one of the best records of their career.

Autopsy- Morbidity Triumphant Well, am a huge Autopsy fan, so it’s really no surprise that I dig this new album. But I gotta admit, I even think it’s much better than I anticipated it to be, as it is a big step up from the previous release. There’s not a single moment here that bored or disappointed me. And there are plenty of consistencies nodding back to all material of their past, making this feel particularly familiar while still possessing the qualities a new album should to differentiate from previous releases. Great stuff.
Graceless- Chants from Purgatory The reason I checked it out other than the artwork was the description that it sounds influenced from early Amon Amarth. I kinda get that listening to it, but it is also it’s own thing. Pretty cool.
Sumerlands- Dreamkiller When the album started I knew right away this sounded like a high quality record. The first listen gave me a very strong impression. Funny enough, by the 3rd listen I feel much less excited for this record. I think the level of depth to this record is not there when compared with the first album. With that being said though, I think there are strong areas of improvement shown on the record, especially on vocals. Overall, I still really enjoy the record, but not on the same high note that I expected.

The music is similar to the debut just with better (and more) hooks. The new singer is taking things in a different direction (less doomy but more twisted) and at the end of the day, I like both albums a lot.

Haven’t had too many quality listening sessions truthfully in more than a month or two with the new job being twice as busy as my last one and pulling away much more of my free time than anticipated. So I mostly listen to stuff while in transport on subways. Nevertheless, the tunes are banging.
Wormrot- Hiss Truly my first Wormrot album and a cool surprise as it’s a very varied listen. Been listening to it off and on for a month or more. As a violinist, I love the way they incorporated a violinist from Singapore on a few tracks. It was used in a way that doesn’t hurt the experience at all, unlike my feeling about strings in symphonic black metal for example. Speaking of variety, there is even a nice thrasher on the album!
Wo Fat- The Singularity Stoner Doom/Rock that really does it for me. The musicality on this thing is insane and the bluesy riffs really hit all the right spots. Heavy enough at times to get the head banging and competent enough to get the head thinking. A very cool record.
Bloodbath- Survival of the Sickest It’s Bloodbath, what more do I need to say? Other than maybe it’s their strongest release in like, forever.

Riot City- Electric Elite This was easily my #1 most anticipated album release of 2022 from the moment I learned it would be released this year. As a diehard fan of the first album, 2019's Burn the Night, there simply couldn't be anything higher on my list. That says a lot because I'm a massive Autopsy fan and that new Autopsy album turned out great! But anyway, I'm now on the final track of the new Riot City album on my first full-album listen and it's so strange. Okay, so they added an extra member since their first album, a fantastic singer. I actually loved the vocals before his joining, but I can see why they might want to add someone who wasn't also tied to the guitar, given the explosive vocals in the band. They did a pretty good job finding someone with a similar range and skill set, but at the same time, the vocalist they found is more powerful and full-ranged with a ton more control. At times, I almost felt like I was listening to a Power Metal band with the vocal style. And track 3 (Tyrant) almost feels like a Battleroar song?! The album has a lot more variety on it than the first album, which so far I am very hit-or-miss about. The album is more polished than the debut, which for me is a bummer, given the raw and unbridled energy of the debut was a huge part of the band's charm. However, this feels like a new adventure and it is equally well done, so I think with more listens I may just have to call this more than a worthy follow-up. At the very least, this is definitely no sophomore slump release! The effort put into this is impressive!

Iron Kingdom- The Blood of Creation Totally only checked this out because of the review I saw on the site. I never even heard of the band until that moment, but wow, great album here. I like how they did a closing track of more than 13 minutes and not a single moment of it was filler.
Exhumed- To the Dead Getting a surprisingly high amount of replay value out of this one, despite the fact it's really nothing new or exceptional for the band. It's just a really solid effort for what they do.
Riot City- Electric Elite Initially I was quite disappointed because the first album of theirs was a stone cold classic and I will always consider it one, whereas this album feels like a slight turn in direction. Later on I can see connections to the first album more but they did take some big risks and tried some different stuff on here. It's impressive in its own right. I now love this album, but it's not as solid as the debut for me.
