Deströyer 666 - Never Surrender I didn't know that was out yet (and it looks like I don't get promos from SOM). Just fired it up on Spotify a few minutes ago.

Pretty endemic of modern D666: good to sometimes excellent guitar work held back by limp songwriting and god awful vocals. The fact KK is just showing his ass with his attempts at social commentary with the single certainly doesn't help.

Eh.. It's much cooler than I thought it would be although I agree regarding the cringe-y lyrics and whatever social message it is he tries to get across.
NP: Kampfar - Urkraft.
Close to, if not the of the year for me. The vocals are so versatile and riffs are so fucking good.

Judas Priest- Turbo In truth, I actually had never listened to this album in full until a few days ago. Been home a lot with my 3 year old son as my family has been dealing with the Covid cycles. Took this as a chance to sneak some Heavy Metal into my boy's music listening schedule. My wife does not like Metal and doesn't really want him listening to it (at least not yet), although she respects that I like it, just doesn't want to hear it. So now that she's been largely resting with her Covid, I decided to take a first stab and let my kid hear Judas Priest. Turbo is not the most aggressive chapter of Priest by far, yet it still has some edge to it. Noticed it hasn't been reviewed on the site yet, but elsewhere it seems on average an unfavorable album. I must admit that there are a few tracks on here which do not contain enough riffage or heavy energy to sustain my focus much, but there are truly 3 or 4 great tracks on here. I especially enjoy the closer, "Reckless." Damn, that's a really great tune. And there are some killer guitar solos on this album, so yeah, I am enjoying the repeated listens these days. How'd I do, Crypt? My kid's first Metal listening experience: Turbo by Priest...haha!

My daughter got Iron Maiden when she was probably 5-6 and she tolerated it, for a while anyway. She just came up to me the other day asking for some recommendations for a friend who wanted some bands to explore like Agalloch, Black Sabbath and Fluids! I didn’t have a lot for Agalloch as they are so unique but gave her Candlemass, Solitide Aeturnus and While Heaven Wept along with Death and Exhumed to get her started. OT the Sacrifice reissues from High Roller

That album has so many apologists these days, meaning that a lot of parents hugged their children too much (I kid, glad you got to do that) OT: Root-Black Seal

OT the Sacrifice reissues from High Roller I strongly considered Maiden, but I wasn't going to choose one of the first two albums and Bruce's voice is just a bit edgier and unwieldy in a way that would drive my wife crazy if she had to hear it. Sure, there's Blaze, and actually his voice is the easiest for someone like my wife to listen to, but I just wasn't feeling it, so I went with Priest. haha! I started the better album, Screaming for Vengeance, but it was much heavier overall and I figured I'd better start lighter. Pretty cool about your daughter. Man, I won't forget my time spent digging through Candlemass's great albums. Good call there.

Scáthe Na Déithe- Virulent Providence A new release from a Black/Death band from Ireland that I’m now listening to for the first time. Not their first release, and I wish I had known the en sooner. This album only has two songs, both at 20 minutes, with plenty of tempo and shifts to keep each long track interesting but also a noticeable amount of tying themes together throughout so that it doesn’t just feel random. It’s hard for me to think of a band that sound quite like this, but it’s not particularly out of the box either. It has some very rich, dark tones underlining much of the action, which sound really nice. The vocals are also really solid. Will be listening to this a lot more.
Nothingness- Supraliminal Also a 2023 release from a band I didn’t know before, this is one of the best Death Metal records I’ve heard in a while. At times it reminded me a little of more modern Cannibal Corpse, but then the record really evolves a lot through its runtime and ultimate proved to be quite a dynamic experience, which had plenty of cool effects and solos on it to keep me interested in every moment. Really solid album!
Bootlegs- WC Monster (released in 1989) Fun little thrash/speed album by an Icelandic band here, a discovery for me simply because I had recently noticed I’ve been listening to a lot of Icelandic bands lately by chance. A lot of fun but predictable syncopated riffs and vocals rhythms drove most of the songs, but the songs were fun and none overstayed their welcome. For the year it released, I’m impressed with this release, but it’s not mandatory listening or anything.
Sodality- Benediction Released quite recently, this is for me a polarizing release. They play a very dark-tinted black metal with long song structures and an overall depressing atmosphere which is devoid of color. In fact, it sounds like a thousand shades of gray, which is a stark contrast to a lot of the black metal I’ve been listening to lately. However, what is here is executed well, just swirling, depressing black metal that functions largely in massive midpaced fashion without much variation in some way.
