What a sad start for a new year... Aleksi Laiho passed away at his home in Helsinki, Finland, last week. More about this tragedy can be read from Bodom After Midnight's FB -page... www.facebook.com/bodomaftermidnightofficial/

Holy shit! I was never a big fan of CoB, but dude was a hell of a talent and not shitty from what I can tell. Fucking tragic.

Damn. I had sort of lost track of the band since the mid-2000s but I knew he was dealing with health issues. I didn’t know it was that serious. R.I.P.

I was shocked to hear this. Way too young.
I met him once. And I love the early Bodom stuff, especially Hatebreeder and Follow the Reaper, but I didn't really keep up with the later releases. They got a little too "metalcore-ish" for me.

They got a little too "metalcore-ish" for me. His death totally surprised me, too. He was just too young to die... I had a chance the interview Alexi in 2003 and 2008 (if I am recalling correctly?) and he was a really nice bloke in those interviews I must admit. I followed them up to their 6th album, Blooddrunk, but after that felt like they were slipping toward a pretty uninspiring direction musically.

They got a little too "metalcore-ish" for me. Yeah, that’s how they lost me. I remember when Follow the Reaper came out. Distribution in North America was a a bit lacking at the time and I wanted it “now”. I ended up ordering it directly from Spinefarm. But back then a lot of distros weren’t offering PayPal or any other way of paying online (securely anyway). So, after placing my order, they sent me an email with the phone number to call them for my credit card information. Because of the time difference, I had to call them very early in the morning before work (after work here would be very late in the evening in Finland). I had a bit of a hard time understanding the guy and so did he, so that was a little funny. Anyway, got my CD a few days later. I think that ended up costing me around C$40.

I never heard a full-length to my memory, and yet Children of Bodom and especially Alexi are strong figures in my memory. I think I heard more material from Hate Crew Deathroll than any other album, but I had quite a lot of their material from combined record label sample compilations, Nuclear Blast DVDs, and other things. He was also a common figure to be interviewed and talked about in Revolver Magazine, a magazine I read when I was in early high school. I remember one of the main things I knew about Alexi from the magazine was that he was a very big drinker, at what was perceived as dangerous alcohol content levels. Yet, absolutely, he was this cool, down to earth person who was also a phenomenal musician.
I regret now not having ever really full dedicated my listening attention to a full album. I admittedly found a lot of their material I heard uninteresting, but some of it was incredible. The energy from especially Hate Crew was impressive to me at the time. The whole 100 guitarists from Hel thing I had never heard about, and now I want to see if I can find that on Youtube. That sounds like an incredible event!
