In other news, I was talking Slayer with someone in a Discord server and they claimed that Hell Awaits contains progressive elements. I share this here because I am genuinely stunned that I heard someone seriously argue anything Slayer did counts as Prog.

I think the most notable thing if I consider what Hell Awaits did that other early Slayer albums didn't do is that there were some longer songs on that album, if my memory is right. I remember feeling like some songs ran quite long, especially when compared to the likes of the short Reign in Blood. I think that prog is a style which is a bit misunderstood, as some people tend to relate it with song length. If it's more than 5 minutes per song, it seems some people will dub it prog. While I don't subscribe to that line of distinction, some really seem to. Oh well. That totally rad drum fill Lombardo does on that track in the first half that sounds kinda like a beat-up junker car starting with difficulties was pretty badass and progressive though! hahaha

So my epic metal inspired string orchestra piece turned out to be a massive hit with my Grade 10 class. Didn't expect that at all. The heavy but basic riff and chord progressions just really hit those kids hard and in a cool way. It's so cool to see them playing bits and getting excited about what they're experiencing. Epic metal writing turned into string orchestra writing can really turn heads. Even more cool is when we'd finish a bit and the students were collectively trying to decide what kind of storyline accompanies the parts. The topics they brought to the storyline began with talks of "mystical beginnings" and later "battlefield soundtrack." Sounds pretty accurate. haha, now I just need to play some Battleroar for them.

That is awesome, good on you.
Looking forward to hear how they react to the source of your inspiration.

If you ever record your class playing the piece, I'd love to hear it I'll keep it in mind. Probably I'll post it to my Facebook and I'll post that on here one day once they've learned it well enough for a decent play through. Takes a while since these students don't have orchestra everyday like I did growing up. Twice a week, and they are all in their first year of playing, so they're absolute beginners who have just worked really damn hard to sound much more mature than they actually are.

Sometimes being a teacher I had some hilarious moments that I don't forget. For example, a student who was late to my class during role call had gone to the nurse. I asked why he was at the nurse, and a student excitedly told the story "Jin was fighting with Thomas at recess and then Jin somehow hit his forehead on the back of a chair and his head was like... 'raining blood'!"
Now when I heard that story, I was supposed to be concerned and all that, but all I could think about was how that was the most metal childish story I ever heard. Even Slayer somehow got a shoutout in that story! HAHA!

So this is kind of interesting. Jeremy's not a great singer, and it seems some of his Greek is off, but I admire the dedication to the idea

Got a quandary for you lot. I've recently had people argue to me in earnest that early Queensryche (i.e., their good albums) was Glam, one as a reason for why the suck and the other for why they rule. Neither had terribly convincing arguments, claiming they sound similar to Ratt and WASP and had the same "vibes", which...no? If anyone understands the connection they're trying to make, I'd appreciate having it spelled out, because I am absolutely baffled by it.

Err, I'm not terribly familiar with their work in all honesty, but I know who they are, and this sounds like one of those things to me kind of like how some people call Motorhead a metal band while others acknowledge them as a rock and roll band. Lemmy himself pointed out that the only reason people categorize them as metal is because of their image, mostly due to long hair. Queensyrche had a kind of glam look at one point if my memory is right, but that doesn't mean they were a glam band. I think far too often people categorize bands by look and less by sound. I'm not sure that's what's going on in this case or not.

Listening to tunes and doing needlework.... With spring (and vaccinations), comes hope for some kind of live shows later this year. And with hope comes renewed enthusiasm for tackling a project I have had lying around for some time.
This is the start of my second vest. Not really done with the first, but want to do this mostly because I found the awesome Kodex back-patch and want to build something around that.
The idea is to keep it real simple - just a few select patches of fave bands and keeping it loosely to a epic metal / epic doom theme.

Badass AK patch. I need a battle jacket.
