Yay for death metal converts! Yeah, there’s some great stuff out there. I was totally going to suggest you listen to Bolt Thrower a while back after finding out which death metal albums you liked a few days back. You might also like the Cause of Death album by Obituary. I will say though, I cannot stand Gatecreeper. It hits me as extremely generic and uninteresting. That being said, they’re super popular, so I may just never get it. Glad you’re giving some good death metal albums a chance. Do yourself a favor and hear Morbid Angel’s Altars of Madness, please. It was a life changer for me in a big way.
Actually I have a hard time getting Bolt Thrower. Don't get me wrong, perfectly fine and all. But have a hard time getting why they have the cult following they have.
Will check out that Morbid Angel album, thanks

Immortal- At the Heart of Winter Since beginning my quest to reignite the flames of interest in black metal, I've listened to a ton of black metal. This album I am now coming back to, and I just cannot deny the Immortal formula of black metal, focusing on riffs that aren't simply repetitive tremolo picking. For this reason, I think Immortal will in time be among my top 5 black metal bands list. I will certainly visit more of their albums aside from the ones I already listened to, like this one and Northern Chaos Gods and what little I've heard from Sons of Northern Darkness.
Abbath- Outstrider Being that I now really identify well an interest in Immortal, it's only natural that I'm also revisiting and playing the hell out of Abbath's second album. Wow, it's such a fun record, and a major highlighting feature of this album for me is how great Abbath is as a frontman. His vocals are so perfect on this album, fun and always engaging in his delivery.
Frozen Soul- Crypt of Ice Now I'm putting this record down. I have listened through it 4 times since last night. I don't think it has held up well for me, and I doubt I'll be revisiting it anytime soon. This album is certainly for some death metal fans, but not for me. Some of the writing here is too simplistic and uninteresting. I really don't understand why it has garnered an average rating of 94% on Metal-archives with the two reviews that are up there. I'm not saying it is a lousy record. For what these guys do, they're quite good at it, and deliver a nice vibe with the theme of the music. However, there are a ton of uninteresting riffs, including the boring slam riff stuff on a couple of tracks or so. At times, this feels like a beatdown hardcore album, which is when I feel like putting this down. Again, not a bad record, and still worth checking out, but for me it's sitting at a 3.25/5.
Uada- Djinn Here's an album I almost checked out once I first saw it last year, but following along with my black metal theme, I did not dive in simply because it was black metal. I listened to the first track last week and really got into it, so now I'm about to play the album. I feel a bit hopeful that this will be a fun record to dig into. It's up next on my queue.

Argus: Boldly Stride the Doomed. Argus is one of the best and most underrated heavy/doom bands around. A firm favourite of mine - which I have been lucky enough to catch live twice.

I'm starting to burn out on black metal again, but I'll admit that I have found a lot of better reasons to listen to it than to ignore it, which means this year I will make an effort to try not to avoid black metal releases all year, and instead give a chance to them, as there are some records I'm genuinely excited about. Finishing my current black metal binge by revisiting a more recent favorite of mine: Funeral Mist- Hekatomb Why this album? Although metalmike may not have left it a glowing review, it contains exactly what I prefer to hear in my black metal. This is a furious whirlwind of fast riffs, intense, blasting drumming, and vocals that have just enough variety to avoid being boring, and instead prove to be a commanding force over the audio assault. Another reason I enjoy this record is that some songs sound genuinely different and each have their own identity, unlike my feeling with a number of big black metal releases which seemingly run the mono-tremolo riff gamut. This marks the end of my decidedly black metal binge. Also listening to: Power Trip- Nightmare Logic You know, as good as this album was thought to be, and as much as I love thrash metal, I never totally got the hype on this record. Sure, it sounds crispy and sharp-edged in the best way possible. But for some reason, I only enjoyed it in small one or two-song bursts and anything more left me feeling the experience could only degrade from there. Now that I've had a ton of Eternal Champion in my listening habits, I had some fun picking out qualities in this Power Trip record which remind me of Eternal Champion, especially bits that have guitar and drum patterns/riffs which sound almost as if borrowed or influenced by the first track on either of Eternal Champion's two full-lengths. Obvious Power Trip didn't borrow from the new one, but knowing that there is a shared guitarist helps me to associate these guitar efforts with each other. I still could not personally give Nightmare Logic more than a 4/5 at this time, and maybe that is me being generous, but I just don't feel it has long stay power for me for some reason. I do enjoy it a lot though.
