I’ve never seen the appeal of American (and Canadian) football. Same for soccer. Maybe one day I’ll sit down and try to « get it », but then again I stopped following hockey years ago, soooo….

Ugh, my Chiefs lost. Lame Super Bowl. Trying to be happy for the Bengals but nope, not happy. Hope the Rams can beat them at the big game. Any football (American) fans here? Yeah, been following New England for as long as I can remember (I’m from the area). Sorry your Chiefs lost, I stopped watching after the first half because I thought they were going to roll and can’t honestly believe they lost. I’ll be rooting for Cincinnati because when my team isn’t in the game, I root for the city that’s never won, though I think Stafford deserves it too after toiling for the shitty Lions for so many years

I was not a fan of the team during the Brady days but now I have renewed interest. However, my second favorite team is the Bills, and I guess the rematches set the tone for the way their season finished. Watching Chiefs struggle so much in the second half vs the Bengals was brutal. I couldn’t help but wonder what Josh Allen would have done in that situation. I bet the Bills would have made it to the Bowl, had they not lost to the Chiefs pre-AFC championship match. I’d normally do like you and cheer for the team that hasn’t won, but ugh, I just can’t bring myself to cheer for the Bengals. Haha! Still, that Burrow to Chase connection is something magical.

I get it. Football and its appeal for me is largely due to how complex it is. I can watch forever and always feel like I’m learning more about the richness of strategy that it holds. I didn’t get it for the first 20 years of my life, but after a roommate sat me down with a Firestone Double Jack bomber and explained how everything worked on a regular season game during my masters degree, I was hooked. It just takes understanding the core fundamentals and likely having a team to root for to get into it. For me, growing up in Arkansas, the Kansas City Chiefs were the near and appealing team, since AR doesn’t have a team in the NFL. Add on top of that the fact I grew to love Kansas City and saw some games while in bars over there and I was naturally a Chiefs fan. As for Canadian Football League, I’ve only been up to Canada once, for an audition for the violin section of Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. I loved that city. Travelled Calgary for a few days. Also, some of my favorite bands are from Calgary. So I cheer for the Calgary Stampeders in the CFL. Maybe you can try watching a CFL game next year. They have a lot less teams than the NFL so it’s not as overwhelming to dive into. Not that you need to get into sports. This is all if you’re interested. I wasn’t but then I turned into a massive fan. If I didn’t live in China now, I’d be spending my weekends watching live football instead of teaching extra violin lessons. Haha

Hahaha, I relate to that so well. I complain about not enough time in the day all the time. I don’t even watch movies or TV really anymore. Just keeping up with NFL and occasionally college and Canadian football league. It’s impossible to follow it all though. Plus all the jobs I do. My apologies, again, as I’ve had a half-written review open on my laptop for two weeks already. I’ll finish and submit it one day soon. Haha

So the Foo Fighters made a middling Black/Thrash song as part of some movie they're making. Shockingly, it's not awful. Nothing I'd recommend outside of the novelty, but still.

So I bought an electric guitar a couple months back, although I’m a violinist who doesn’t know much about guitar. Thought about getting one for a long time if only so I could learn to play some licks from my favorite songs. I commented yesterday in the playlist thread that I found a riff from Midnight’s new album playable, the one called “More Torment.” The more i okay the more I realize a lot of riffs aren’t that hard, and I’m a beginner without a teacher. Haha
Then again, there are a ton of really hard songs too. But I truly in the beginning just wanted to learn the whole Lucifer’s Fall album that released last year, and that was my biggest motivation. Finally played my favorite lead from the album and the badass riff that followed it from the closing track of the album just now. It feels damn good to be able to play along with a great album!
But wow...the guitar tuning is a conundrum...so many bands use such different tunings, which is really difficult to deal with if you’re a beginner like me who really gets music but needs consistency in the instrument to learn to play it better. After my buddy helped me figure out Lucifer’s Fall’s tuning, which is a pretty unique tuning, I decided I won’t change this for a long while. Hahaha

I'm trying my best to stay active, both forum-wise and more importantly for our site, reviews-wise. However, about 10 days ago I started my new job in Shanghai and the orientation days have been very, very busy. I had lined up the Riot City debut for review, especially since a new one is coming soon (FINALLY!!!!) and the debut fucking ruled, but I just can't find much time to sit and do it, especially with a 3 year old in the house. haha
Something I really wish I could feel differently about in the workplace is my feelings about sharing my interests in Metal with my colleagues. As a violinist, I have experienced a few times extreme discrimination once some of the gig masters had found out that I was a metalhead, especially out in Phoenix where I last lived for 8 years before moving to China. I was a very busy violinist and violin teacher back in those days, but some of the gig masters cut ties with me even just after finding out without discussion with me that I'm a big fan of heavy metal. So now here I am, in a more formal workplace, teaching music in a massive international school with a ton of really cool teachers from all over the place. It's really cool to have friends from literally every corner of the world under a single roof and working together. However, it's unfortunately a sour topic for me (especially considering I'm one of the new music teachers on campus handling grade 1-5 classes) that I don't feel like I can safely admit my true interests, especially when all these non-music teachers ask all the time in orientation meetings and activities "what is your favorite music?"
On the other hand, I did at least openly share my interest in metal with the other new music teacher who is also teaching grade 1-5 classes like I am, and she was totally cool with it. Even more, she wanted to hear examples. I first showed her Traveler because I thought I'd ease her in with something melodic that I like and she liked it too. Then I showed her Pierced from Within by Suffocation and she wasn't having, but at the same time, she thought it was interesting and cool that I liked it. haha! So for now, I'm just being selective about who I am open with, but I hate feeling like a closeted metalhead due to discrimination. If this job wasn't so crucial for my staying in China (visa needs!) and stuff, I would be much more open, but unfortunately, I have still seen the days of unfairness from those who don't understand music that is perhaps less radio-friendly. When you work in education, especially an elite school like international schools in China where a year of tuition is literally $20,000 US, you've gotta put on your best shirt and pants and always present yourself as spotless as you can and learn when you can relax and when you need to have your guard up. Hopefully someday that will change. After all, Heavy Metal is literally 50 years old already!

As long as you are meeting the expectations of the position you were hired for, it shouldn’t matter what kind of music you listen to, what food you like to eat, who you choose to be with, etc. Humans being humans, some will always treat things they don’t understand with ridicule, derision, fear, etc. nice that you found someone that can at least respect “your” music even if she didn’t like it.

This would be really funny if it wasn't so sad. Hey Mike, if you want to do something really funny, you could always show them your review Razor having a pissy fit

You put your music out there and others have a right to have an opinion.

The album is getting (undeserved) praise all over, so that would be a shock to them.

I read the review at Angry Metal Guys review and it praised some of it and was harsh to other parts, a lot of the same songs I called out. I wasn’t nearly as harsh but certainly not flattering. Wonder if Carlo will ever see it? I’ll be sending the link to the label, so maybe

I just took a quick look but his reviews are too long. Low rating, though. I think Carlo will see whatever is sent to the PR guy. I've seen both him and the band's official Facebook page post links to reviews, though I haven't seen Angry Metal Guy's nor yours. So far it's all super positive. I was watching a podcast last night and they were going to talk about it, but the podcast started an hour late and I only had time to hear what they had to say about Gaerea. Going to have to watch the rest later.
