Destruction and Nervosa in Iowa City on Mother's Day. Great show and I honestly thought there would be a bigger crowd. Maybe 50-60 people there? Pretty pathetic turnout for two high quality thrash bands like that. I think I got covid at the show in Montreal. It was worth it. Last Friday I saw Nova Spei, Renanimator and a few songs from B.A.R.F. (I was too tired to stay). Nova Spei (local) were better than I expected. Reanimator totally killed. B.A.R.F. were decent but not really my thing, and with the heat, my feet hurting and being tired, they weren't decent enough for me to stay.

I think I got covid at the show in Montreal. It was worth it. Well, shit. Uh, don't die. I was clear of it within days. The worst part was being very tired for about three days. The cold I got last week was worse (I hadn't missed getting colds since the apocalypse started... used to get them every year from someone at the office).

At Rockfest in Hyvinkää, Finland, at the moment.
Seeing bands like Maiden, Scorpions, Candlemass, Amorphis, etc. live here - and will be interviewing Candlemass at the festival tomorrow, too. Great times ahead for sure...

Dropped in to the Stormbringer Metal Fest in Worcester, MA last night and caught Glacier (who killed) and Gatekeeper (who did not). On the one hand, a dozen bands over two days certainly qualifies as a festival but there couldn't have been more than 100 people there. It was an excellent lineup with bands like Seax, Attacker, Tower and Adamantis along with some local groups so hopefully it will continue and pick up more momentum next year. Been too long since I attended a show that didn't have more modern/nu/metalcore fans than anything else. It was refreshing to see Traveler and Bathory shirts and Smoulder and Pagan Altar back patches.

Saw Xplicit Noïse, Satanic, Nervous Impulse and No Trust last night. I was mainly there for Satanic as I didn't really know the other bands, but it was a fun show. Two death metal shows next weekend, that's going to hurt.

Everyone was having a great time though and the bands seemed really into it when they were on stage, unfazed by the turnout. I really hope it happens again and more people start showing up so it can move to a better venue rather than the shit hole it was in.

I would have given my last beer away to catch that lineup, Glacier in particular. Strange that trad can't pull more crowds than that. In Europe it would have been a different story I think.

Yeah, luckily Glacier played at a time I could make it between work (the show started at 3 or 4 pm each day) as they were my priority. I would love to have gone back for the second day to catch Tower but another $40 ticket and nearly 2 hour round trip with gas over $5/gallon was not in the cards. I think Tower is playing in Boston at some point, hopefully it won’t be a week night.

Late weeknight shows are a nuisance, especially for those of us with more years behind us than ahead of us.

I was lucky that the last show I went to had seats. Not a lot, but people didn't just stay seated all night so it was possible to get a little rest from time to time.

Last week / weekend was Copenhell festival in Denmark. Greatest party I have ever been to - and a string of great concerts. The headliner layer was kind of insane - Iron Maiden, Metallica, Judas Priest, Kiss, Mercyful Fate all played good to great shows but MF in particular stands out as awesome.
Also enjoyed Danish favourites D:A:D and Baest, who also ruled the main stage. But some of the most intense experiences was at the smaller stages, where I caught great concerts by among others Gatecreeper, High Command, Wayward Dawn, Lydsyn and Thundermother.
I increasingly feel that the great metal/rock experiences can be best found at gigs at smaller venues by the younger bands, who still have the fire in their hearts.
But man, I think I am beginning to be too old for four days of revelry, moshing and generally running around, have taken a week to feel human again, and my knees are still shot. Oh well, was worth it. I think.

Oh well, was worth it. I think. Sounds like a great fest. Hard to find fault in Maiden, Priest, or Mercyful Fate and KISS puts on a great show even if you aren't a fan. Metallica is tolerable as long as they play some old stuff. And I'm with you, I much preferred being at Stormbringer with 100 fans really into the music and bands happy to be playing for people that like their music. I've never been a night owl and now in my mid-50s, I have to gear myself up for shows. I have very little tolerance left for standing through crap waiting for the bands I want to see. I need the Curmudgeon Fest where the bands start at 1pm and the show is over by 8 and there are plenty of seats LOL!

On the 18th: Killitorous , Hatalom , Ignominy , Demonarchy. The show started 1.5-2 hours late. I left sometime after 11:30pm and the second band hadn't started yet. For all I know, the headliner hasn't started has I type this. WTF. Not many people there. Thinking back, most must have been the various band members, which of course sucks (and probably why the show started so late, likely hoping for more people to show up).
19th: Introtyl, Exotoxic and Aulnes. Aulnes are listed as "sludge metal" on Metal Archives, but they pretty much killed live. So did Exotoxic. Both bands are old timers and they certainly delivered the goods. The good ladies of Mexico's Introtyl are even better live now than when I saw them nearly four years ago. The new album is pretty cool as well. Attendance was really good, so either the day before people were not interested in the bands, or they just had to pick one but not both. I think I saw only one person who was at both shows.
Last night: Outre-Tombe, Saccage, Skumstrike and Décryptal. Décryptal were totally unknown. Their demo isn't out yet and they only showed up on the Internet a few days ago. They showed a lot of potential on stage and the crowd's reception was very positive, so I'm looking forward to hearing that demo which I think is "coming very soon." I missed Skumstrike in Montreal last month because I had COVID. Really cool set and I'm looking forward to hearing more stuff from these guys. I've been wanting to see Saccage since the fall of 2018 when their show got cancelled on the same day (grrr...) Fuck these guys killed live, just like they do on disc. I had seen Outre-Tombe in mid-April and at that show they definitely showed what they're made of, and this time around they did not disappoint either. Great death metal band with French lyrics on Temple of Mystery Records.
