The show started 1.5-2 hours late. I left sometime after 11:30pm and the second band hadn't started yet. Man, that is so annoying when that happens - especially on a weekday.

I saw Ültra Raptör and Lüger in Quebec City on Friday. Speed Terror had to bow out of the show for some unspecified reason. Lüger was a bit of a revelation, I hadn't heard them before. Kind of punky, heavy rocking heavy metal with a lot of attitude. I knew Ültra Raptör a little bit (MetalMike has reviewed their album and now that I've fixed the site, you can actually find the review in the list - fucking accents). Not crazy about the vocals, but on stage the singer has a good stage presence and that makes up for it. Cool show overall. And they have AC and some seats. Civilized, as Sargon would put it.

Tower with Seax, Adamantis and Iron Will last night just outside Boston. The three opening bands are “local” (eastern Massachusetts) with Tower coming up from New York. Oh, and I met some guy who came down all the way from Canada to see the show. Says he runs a metal website, which I’ll have to check out sometime Had never heard of Iron Will though they’ve been around for 20 years and Al Ravage from Ravage plays drums. They were very good and put on a nice opening set for the show. The singer said they have a new album coming out so I will need to check it out I liked Far Flung Realm from Adamantis and their set was good but the small venue and their brand of power/traditional metal didn’t translate as well as the other bands. It didn’t help when early on one of the guitar players lost his low E string and it took until the end of their set to get him a new axe Seax killed with a 45 minute set of speed metal might. Lots of stuff from the stellar Fallout Rituals, a couple of older cuts and one from the new album Speed Inferno that comes out at the next of September. Definitely a band for your watch list if you like speed metal It was hard to imagine being Tower and having to go on after Seax who had their local following and had just annihilated the audience with their set but the New Yorkers wasted no time in laying down their own set of devastation. The focus was on Shock to the System with a few older songs and they sounded great and did about everything they could with 5 people on a tiny stage. Lots of energy and movement that kept the crowd engaged patches, an import cassette and a shirt were secured from the well-stocked mercy table that featured members of the bands hanging out and chatting with fans (except Iron Will, I didn’t see anything from them)

hehehe With the pandemic winding down, I'm doing staff performance reviews in person. Good write up. I certainly feared for Tower after Seax's set but, damn, did they ever kick some fucking ass. I've seen a lot of shows so far this year and I think this might have been the best. I wasn't expecting much from Iron Will and Adamantis, but that turned out to be cool sets. Not too much fucking around between bands, which is nice when you have four bands lined up. It was what, maybe 15 or so minutes between bands. I had walked over 20 km in Boston that day and then stood for four hours at the venue, so thankfully Mike gave me a ride back to my hotel. I'm not sure my feet would have survived the 30-minute walk back. Didn't stop me from walking 26 km the next day, though. Thankfully I found some beer spots for sustenance.

Goatwhore, Incantation, Bewitcher and Caveman Cult last night in Boston. Funny thing happened, I ran into the same guy from Canada that I saw last week at the Tower show. I think he’s stalking me LOL
Caveman Cult - never heard of theses guys before. They put out a wall of bashing drums, buzzsaw guitars and harsh bellows. It was blur and all the songs sounded the same to me. When I told Michel they were on Nuclear Was Now! Productions, he said, “they fit the profile”. They got the pit wound up right off the bat
Bewitcher - despite some early but minor technical difficulties they killed. Their sound was very good after they worked things out and they played a diverse set with a few from the new one (Cursed Be Thy Kingdom), a few from Under the Witching Cross and a few older tracks to the approval of the crowd. Great performance
Incantation - I’m not a death metal fan and they did little to change my mind but McEntee and company are pros and put on a good show, using the small stage effectively. Very heavy and the crowd surfing that had just started during Bewitcher picked up a bit. It was cool at the end when McEntee held the neck of his guitar over the first few rows of the crowd so they could touch it during the last song. They fans seemed to really eat it up and it looked like he might lose the axe a couple of times
Goatwhore - I will need to leave this one to Michel as it was a “school night” and I had to work in the morning and they weren’t due to start until 10:30. I had an hour drive ahead of me and there was no way I was going to make any of their set and still function the next day (read: I’m old, something two shows in just over a week emphasized)

Goatwhore started a little later than planned (maybe 10 minutes?) and played for an hour or so. What Mike saw in terms of crowd surfing was nothing as it literally exploded during Goatwhore, and also a lot of stage diving as Goatwhore's singer helped the crowd surfer on stage so they could dive back. At some point there were even people entering the stage from the side and running to dive into the crowd. Very intense show and that singer is one hell of a frontman, he really knows how to get the crowd going and sometimes it felt like he was everywhere at once. I could barely stand during the last 30 minutes, but the band was so good that I just had to stay (plus all the driving getting there, it would have been silly to leave early unless the show sucked - something I've done a couple of times in the past).
Barely survived the 30-minute walk back to the hotel. Next day in Boston was hot as fuck (about 34-36 Celsius), but still managed to walk about 21 km. The city tour bus ride was almost more of a pain than walking.

Anvil last night, a local show for a change. They were they only band playing, so it was a pretty short show (my legs and feet were thankful - I'm not getting any younger). I didn't notice exactly what time they started playing, but I figure they played about 75 minutes. Very diverse set with some classics as well as some newer stuff. I saw them a lot in the 2000s and the sets weren't always very varied from one show to the next, so this was cool. Man, those guys are loud and they really show they have fun on stage, very entertaining. It was a small crowd. I don't know, maybe 50-60 people, but it was a very loud crowd making the kind of noise I'd expect from a crowd 2-3 times that size. Lots of old timers like me and a good number of young people. At some point I looked toward the bar and the barmaid, who must not have been much older than 20 (if that), was rocking out behind the bar. lol Anyone who can catch them on the rest of the Canadian dates should check them out. I believe they just finished the U.S. tour.

I was at the infamous Brutal Assault festival in CZ for 5 days and saw many great acts... Vio-lence, Heathen, D.R.I., Sigh, Schizophrenia, Cannibal Corpse, etc. etc. etc.
Great and cheap beer and food, awesome people, fabulous atmosphere and so on... One of the best metal festivals I have ever attended, that's for certain. Perhaps I will attend that festival next year again who knows.

Anthrax/Black Label Society/Hatebreed/Sword last night.
I never thought I'd get to see Sword live. With them being from Montreal, their videos got a lot of airplay on Canadian music channels back in the '80s. They only played for 25 minutes, but it was a solid set. They played two new songs, one of which was "alright", but the other one sounded much better. It looks like an announcement for a new album might be coming around September 22nd.
I left just as Hatebreed were starting their third song. Beer was calling and me and my friend stayed outside drinking until they were finished. Really not my style, but I can say that those guys know how to put on a show and get the crowd going. Same for BLS, in fact we left into the second song (beer, again) and only returned when it was time for Anthrax. There were a lot of BLS t-shirts there.
I had seen Anthrax open for Judas Priest in 2005 and thought they gave a good show. I was never much into them. I like a few songs and the rest are "OK". But Belladonna is one hell of a frontman live and he was all over the place, and the other guys also knew how to entertain. Not exactly for a band that has been around and touring for so long. So while I'm still not a fan, I had one hell of a great time watching their set.
Before the show, just as I was bringing food over to our table outside, some guy saw me and stopped dead in his tracks and went, "Are you Michel Renaud? The guy who writes about metal?" That was weird. lol

Deicide/Kataklysm/Inhuman Condition in Quebec City last night
No seating. I'm getting to hold for this. Inhuman Condition were insane, especially the singer. At some point he got off the stage to get the mosh pit going. That was hilarious. Really good live band. Kataklysm played Serenity in Fire in its entirety. That was good, though I'd rather the singer kept political crap out of his between-song yapping (others will probably disagree if they happen to agree with him - ah!) Deicide were playing Legion but also some more songs, including a few recent ones since they played a full hour and Legion is nowhere near that. Glen did not say one word until just before the last song. Intense and heavy set. It's a tour worth checking out if it comes your way.

Not to mention insanely hard workers. The guitarist and lead singer are both in roughly 3467 other bands....lol

Saw Angelus Apatrida, NervoChaos and Hidden Intent on the 8th of September at the Gas Lamp in Des Moines. People always complain that good metal shows never stop in Des Moines but when they do, these fuckers dont support it. Its not 100% the people here as promotion for these shows is pretty much non existent. MAYBE 15 people at this show. It was a pathetic representation for the Iowa metal scene. All that being said, every band crushed. Played like there were 5000 people in attendance which speaks to their level of care. If you get a chance to see this tour, do not hesitate. Angelus Apatrida is hands down one of the very best modern thrash bands going right now.

Two back-to-back shows in Quebec City last weekend:
- Saturday: Decerebration, Dépérir, Spirit of Rebellion and Daedalean Complex. I found out about it by following Dépérir's page (bought their latest album back in May). The first three bands played great, solid sets, very professional. Decerebration were headlining. I didn't know them before I found out about the show (that actually goes for three out of the four bands...) I liked the couple of albums I had time to check out ahead of time, but I found the live performance lacking compared to the first three bands.
- Sunday: Revocation, Krisiun and Alluvium. A fourth band was supposed to be on the bill but apparently didn't make it across the border. Didn't know them anyway. I was really there for Krisiun. This was only the third date of the North American tour. Had a cool chat with Krisiun's drummer at the merch table early on. Really nice guy. Alluvium were OK, but not my thing. Krisiun were solid and loud as fuck and really got the crowd going. I wish they had been headlining. I didn't stay for Revocation. The new album is alright, what came before is a mixed bag. I was just too tired and it was hot in the venue, looked like the AC was down or just not keeping up. I guess two shows in a row are getting to be too much for my old bones. Or maybe it was going to four craft beer places over the weekend.
Next one, I believe, will be Testament, Exodus and Death Angel in Montreal at the end of the month. Not sure, but I think the show is sold out as I saw a post by somehow looking for a ticket a couple of weeks ago.

"The Bay Area Strikes Back" (Testament, Exodus, Death Angel) last night in Montreal. Pretty sure that was sold out. Lots of people. Thankfully not too hot in there. All solid sets. For some reason I enjoyed Death Angel the most even though that's the one of the three I know the least. Very strong frontman, all over the place. Exodus was great as well and, even though I'm not too big on his vocals, the frontman does a good job. Wish they had played more oldies. Testament was over the top, though there were some problems with the sound. At first I thought it could just be that I was tired, but when we left my friend made the same comment. Second time I've seen them, I think I liked the set better the first time (I think that was 2006). The lineup for Testament merch was insane (D.A. and Exodus had a separate booth). I waited a solid 30 minutes, my friend 40. Got a tour t-shirt and a hoodie.

Death Angel is great live - had the exact same experience a few years back, where they were best (live)band of the evening in a lineup of Suicidal Angels, Exodus & Sodom.
Crazy enough about the merch lines, glade you managed to snag what you wanted.
